Before you start your placement you must make sure you have:
Emailed your job description to the Industrial Placement Year Programme lead in your department for your placement to be approved and copy in the Engineering Placements Team.
Received notification from the Engineering Placements Team that your placement has been approved and that we have received a signed copy of the 'letter of expectation' from your employer.
You must complete the Pre-Placement Briefing , once you have received a notification email from the Student Placement System (InPlace) to ask you to complete the Pre-Placement Briefing. The email will contain a link which will take you directly to the briefing. You will not be allowed to start your placement until you have attended a briefing.
If you have a Learning Support Plan, it is recommended that you contact the Engineering Placements Team to discuss if you would benefit from additional support during your placement year. You can request an appointment with a member of the team where this can be discussed in confidence.
Make sure you have set up your student finance with regard to your tuition fees. You can apply for a reduced maintenance loan, more information on fees, funding and managing your money during your placement year can be found here.
Arranged accommodation - as a fully registered student you will continue to be exempt from council tax. We also recommend visiting Smart Move Sheffield webpage for advice on house hunting and renting accommodation.
Register with a local GP/Medical Centre in case you are ill during your placement year.
Your placement provider will be required to confirm in writing via The University of Sheffield Letter of Expectation that they have Health and Safety policies and procedures and Employers Liability insurance in place.
If you are undertaking an overseas placement you will need to complete the University Risk assessment and apply for the University Travel Insurance. Information on what is covered can be found in the Policy Summary.
Please be aware that the University's travel insurance for overseas placements will NOT cover you for work place accidents/ illnesses. If your host employer will not cover you for this then you will have to arrange your own insurance cover for work place/related accidents/illness.
If you are registered for a standard course and wish to transfer to the programme with an Industrial Placement Year you may be required to apply for the Academic Technology Approval Schemes (ATAS) clearance. Please remember that your Change of Programme form will not be finalised until we receive your ATAS clearance certificate. Students are not allowed to start their placements if they are not fully registered for the Industrial Placement Year programme.
Check with the Engineering Placements Team if you are required to have an NDA with your employer.
Make sure you know the plans for day one (Where to go? Who do you report to? What's the dress code?).
International students: Make sure you have a National Insurance Number.
Read the Industrial Placement Year Handbook.
Optional: Register for Professional Institutions online career development tools and familiarise yourself with the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competences.
