About The Project

Climate change has increasing impacts on natural hydrologic systems and processes within cities. This combined with increased urbanisation of cities has resulted in extreme surface water flooding events within Mansfield and throughout the UK. To decrease the impacts of this issue and its effects on daily life, a variety of retrofitted Sustainable Urban Drainage solutions have been implemented within Mansfield.

The drainage solutions range from bio-swales, permeable paving and street level rain gardens. These interventions have been designed to be implemented on the steep slopes within Mansfield, however, the impacts of topography on city-scale storm-water attenuation is under-researched.

As the project is city scaled, efficient performance could result in large scale flood reduction throughout the city. Therefore before and after data of water levels within the combined drainage system under the city will be evaluated, as well as moisture probes within the systems to monitor their internal hydraulic processes. This data will be used to evaluate the performance and create improved design solutions that can be implemented within other locations.
