Contribute to the Knowledge base

What data can be added?

Any study that measures two or more behaviours and reports the correlation (or any statistic that can be converted into Pearson’s r) can be added to the database. For example, a study that measures aspects of diet (e.g., fruit and vegetable consumption) along with levels of antisocial behaviour (e.g., number of violent outbursts) and reports (or provides the information to allow you to calculate) the correlation between them.

Studies that manipulate or intervene to promote changes in one or more behaviours, or that target one behaviour, and go on to measure at least one other behaviour can also be included, assuming that it is possible to calculate the correlation between the behaviours. For example, a study that seeks to promote physical activity via a smartphone app and then measures the frequency of physical activity and also the frequency with which people smoke can be added to the knowledge base, assuming that it is possible to calculate the correlation between the two measures of behaviour.

What data do you need to be able to add data?

Required information: The minimum requirement is measurement of at least two behaviours (e.g., running and aggressive behaviour), the correlation (r) between these two behaviours (or a statistic that can be converted into effect size r to represent the relationship), the sample size (n) on which the correlation is based, and details regarding the source of the data (e.g., where the data originated from, the name of the study or dataset, and/ or the author’s surname(s) and/or DIO).

Optional information: We are also interested in a number of additional details relating to aspects of the sample and setting (e.g., age and gender of the sample, country of origin), the study design (e.g., method of data collection, time interval between the measures) and the measures of behaviour (e.g., measurement tool used, reliability for the measure of behaviour). This additional information can help future users to query the knowledge base, for example, in order to select only studies conducted in Europe, studies with measures of behaviour that reach a specified level of reliability, or studies with young samples. However, you do not need to have or add this information in order to add your data to the TURBBO database.

Prior to adding your data, we recommend that you review the Contributors Guide which outlines the upload process and all of the data that you will be asked to provide. You can check whether you have all of the required information  using our interactive checklist.

How will the data be used and maintained?

The data will be added to a large and publicly available knowledge base that contains information on the relation between a wide range of behaviours. Users will be able to query the knowledge base to report the relationships between a given set of behaviours. The tool uses procedures in meta-analysis in order to account for the independence of effect sizes (e.g., if the knowledge base contains information on the correlation between behaviours from the same sample at two time points) prior to pooling the effect sizes. In addition, users will be able to refine their query to only include particular data (e.g., published data, data from samples of a given demographic).

All of the data will be stored in accordance with General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) and the knowledge base will only contain summary statistics across samples as a whole - we will not collect any information that could be used to identify participants. However, it is possible that some datasets may contain a small number of participants from a select group (e.g., participants with a very rare genetic condition), which may compromise anonymity. Please consider these data collection issues before uploading data.
