Madeline is a PhD researcher in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of Sheffield. She is supervised by Dr. Brant Walkley, Professor John L. Provis, Professor Lenny Koh (Management School), and is a member of the Sustainable Materials at Sheffield (CBE) research team.
Madeline completed her undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering from Auburn University (Alabama, USA) in 2020. Taking courses in both environmental and structural engineering, she developed a passion for sustainable infrastructure. She obtained her Master’s in Structural Engineering from the University of Leeds in 2021. During this time, she completed her master’s dissertation on United Kingdom’s legacy blast furnace slags for low-carbon cement production.
In 2021, she started her PhD at the University of Sheffield. The focus of her research expands on her master’s dissertation topic by evaluating decarbonisation strategies for the UK cement and concrete sector within the context of energy intensive industries. The project aims to examine this through the implementation of life cycle assessment methodology to evaluate different pathways in which the UK cement and concrete sector can feasibly achieve net-zero by 2050. Her PhD research is funded by an Energy Institute EPSRC DTP scholarship. Madeline is also a Grantham Scholar, as part the training programme at the Grantham Centre for Sustainable Futures.
