Madeline is a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the School of Chemical, Materials, and Biological Engineering at the University of Sheffield. She is a member of the BuildZero team, aiming to transform the UK’s buildings towards zero material extraction, zero carbon, and zero waste, and is researching optimal end-use applications for end-of-life cement and concrete within the UK building and construction sector.
Madeline is a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the School of Chemical, Materials, and Biological Engineering at the University of Sheffield. She completed her undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering from Auburn University (Alabama, USA) in 2020 and obtained her Master’s in Structural Engineering from the University of Leeds in 2021. During her masters, she completed her dissertation on the use of UK legacy blast furnace slags for low-carbon cement production. In 2026, she completed her PhD at the University of Sheffield (under the supervision of Professor Brant Walkley, Dr. Hisham Hafez (University of Leeds), and Professor Lenny Koh), which expanded on her master’s dissertation by evaluating decarbonisation strategies for the UK cement and concrete sector within the context of energy-intensive industries. Her doctoral research applied life cycle assessment and material flow analysis to assess potential pathways for the sector to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Her PhD research was funded by an Energy Institute EPSRC DTP scholarship. Madeline is also a Grantham Scholar, and has since completed the training programme for the Grantham Centre for Sustainable Futures throughout her PhD.
Outside of the University, she has also collaborated Robert McElroy at the University of Lincoln and Julian Lawrence at Teesside University to create the 6th installment of Green Kid; a comic created to educate children on the effects of climate change and the work being done to create sustainable alternatives.
