Dr. Sarah Kearney

Alumni

Sarah worked in the group as a Research Associate working on Iodine abatement in irradiated nuclear fuel recycling, devising an integrated approach to radioiodine removal and disposal. This work was funded by the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, in collaboration with Separations and Nuclear Chemical Engineering (SNUCER) in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, University of Sheffield, the Department of Chemical Engineering & Analytical Science, University of Manchester, and the National Nuclear Laboratory. Sarah was also the Managing Editor of Materials and Structures, the flagship journal of RILEM,.

Sarah obtained her Masters in Geology from the University of Liverpool in 2009, where her research focus was on the petrographic analysis of eclogite facies meta-gabbro samples, and the role of fluids in the metamorphism of these systems. Having spent several years working as a Geotechnical Engineer, since joining the University of Sheffield Sarah's research has centred on radiolysis and radiation damage in cements used for nuclear waste conditioning and disposal.

After working in the group in 2020 and 2021, Sarah has taken on an exciting role as a Project Manager at the Environment Agency.
