Dr. Maryam DerkaniĀ

Alumni

Maryam was a Knowledge Transfer Partnership Associate who worked on Developing additives to improve durability and engineering properties of alkali-activated materials. This project was funded by Innovate UK (J.L. Provis, B. Walkley, N. Bartlett) in partnership w/ Lubrizol Ltd. Maryam was a member of both the Cements@Sheffield (MSE, led by Professor John L. Provis) and Sustainable Materials at Sheffield (CBE) research teams.

She joined the University of Sheffield in March 2020 as a Knowledge Transfer Partnership Associate in the Department of Material Science after completing her PhD in the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK (awarded June 2019). She also holds an MSc in Advanced Chemical and Process engineering from the University of Strathclyde, as well as a BEng in Chemical Engineering from Tehran, Iran. Her PhD was an industrial project based on understanding colloidal interactions at oil-rock-brine interfaces for enhancing oil recovery processes by taking advantage of both experimental measurements and theoretical modelling. This project was focused on understanding the physicochemical interactions between oil, carbonate rock and aqueous solutions by examination of surface charges, surface wettability and surface forces. Over the course of her professional career, Maryam had the opportunity to broaden her perspective and gain an insight into research and development practices, while working in a variety of industries, such as energy, consumer goods, specialty chemicals, etc.

After working in the group from 2019 to 2021, Maryam has taken on an exciting role as a Research Scientist at Unilever.
