Sheffield Varsity 2019 fixtures are LIVE

17 January 2019

We are LIVE. Today, Sheffield Varsity launch the official 2019 fixtures list; a fortnight of sporting delight that will commence with a downhill dual slalom race at Parkwood Springs on Wednesday 13 March and close with the ice hockey finals at Fly DSA Arena on Wednesday 27 March. This year's Varsity line-up includes 79 fixtures and features 32 sports. There are 78 points up for grabs during Sheffield Varsity 2019 and both Team Hallam and University of Sheffield sports clubs will be representing their universities, cheered on by thousands, as they compete for the coveted Varsity trophy.

Now in its twenty-third year, the annual Sheffield Varsity series is the most anticipated homegrown sporting event in the University calendar and the biggest university sporting event in the city. During the last two weeks in March, thousands of students will compete at 18 venues in and around Sheffield; attracting more than 15,000 spectators.

2018 saw the University of Sheffield claim the Varsity trophy for the sixth consecutive year with a final score of 34 (Team Hallam) – 45 (University of Sheffield). Much rides on the final outcome of this year's fixtures, as one university will rise to the top of the overall leaders board; both Team Hallam and University of Sheffield are in a tie-break position with 10 wins and two draws firmly under their belts. The early snowsports fixtures, which took place in Val Thorens over the Christmas break, resulted in a two point lead to University of Sheffield.

As always sports officers from both Students' Unions will represent their teams in all things Varsity throughout the competition. Of this year's Varsity, sports officer and Team Hallam futsal player, Harry Preston says, "Varsity inspires those who already take part in sporting activities across the academic year but also the wider student body, alumni and the city, who join both universities to support and celebrate this remarkable institution. It's the highlight of every teams' season; a historic and revered platform that gives students a unique opportunity to play in front of crowds of supporters in Sheffield."

University of Sheffield Students' Union sports officer, tennis and hockey player, Sarah Morse adds, "It's hard to think of another university event that has the power to unite as many people around a shared passion as Varsity does. It is the climax of the university calendar for thousands of students, often cited as the most memorable and enjoyable student experience whilst at Sheffield. Unsurprisingly, Varsity fixtures attract many alumni students back to this great city to support their teams in this celebration of sport. Varsity gives sport at both universities the recognition it deserves and provides a platform for our committed student athletes to showcase all their hard work in a fun and competitive environment."

Sheffield Varsity thanks City Taxis, Fortis Student Living and Endsleigh for sponsoring Varsity 2019, the official media partner Forge Sport, the volunteers and staff that make this annual celebration of sport possible, and welcomes this year's competitors and spectators. Ticketed events (boxing, ice hockey, football and Sports Park Day) will be released in early February with tickets available to students from both Sheffield Hallam University and University of Sheffield Students' Unions.
