What is a PhD? The end goal is a thesis but there are lots of other things that you learn to do and experience during your studies. In particular, whilst you certainly develop your engineering talents, you also learn to think about what is genuinely new and no one else has ever done before. Once you have created something, or studied something, that no one else has ever seen before, you then tell the world in the form of presentations and articles in journals. A PhD teaches you to find out where the gaps in technology are, how to become part of a research community and how to become a world class scholar. These things are exciting in their own right but they are also highly sought after skills for employers. Also, if you aspire to become a university lecturer then you will almost certainly wish to study for a PhD degree.

Scholarships

If you require funding for your PhD then applying for a scholarship is an options you should consider. UK students can often find scholarships if they have a good first degree. Please write to the EEE PGR Admissions Tutor for more information.

If you have an outstanding academic record with wider contributions to your institution and a great idea for a project then you might be able to secure a scholarship as an overseas student. These scholarships are very competitive and so these should not be thought of as a route to funding simply when the student cannot afford the fees. Enthusiastic letters of recommendation are also required. Submissions for the Engineering Faculty administered scholarships are through the PGR admissions system. However, it is essential that your application is co-created with your academic supervisor. Note that scholarships must be accompanied by a Supervisor Nomination Form that is submitted separately from the PGR system.

Scholarships are usually reviewed in the early part of the new year. So you should start to think about your applications and have everything in place by December.

Overseas scholarship opportunities likely to be available at the end of the year are:

DTP Scholarships. These are scholarships that are typically for UK students and are provided by EPSRC. EEE typically has 4 of these annually. Up to 30% of the allocation can be used for overseas applicants following a competitive process.

Joint China Scholarship Council. This is a scholarship specifically for Chinese students. It pays university fees only.
