Alongside our monthly reading group, we keep a regular programme of events running through the year. Details of upcoming events are available on our home page: you can also follow our social media pages on Facebook and Twitter for updates.
We offer several short courses for archaeologists, other academics and the general public that cover a variety of topics related to archaeological materials. Please see below for more details.
As well as outreach activities with our partners, we run sessions at, and host, various conferences throughout the year. If you have ideas for workshops or conferences please reach out to us in order to discuss details.
Keep an eye on this page and our social media channel for updates.
Dates TBC 2021
This one-day course, combining lectures and practical activities, covers the process of bronze-making in prehistory: from mining the ore, to smelting the metal, and finally to casting and finishing the artefact. During the course you will:
Crush and process copper ore
Maintain 1000-degree temperatures in a replica furnace using hand-powered bellows
Create a mould for casting your object which you can take home
The £100 fee covers teaching, materials and tools. Please bring a packed lunch and any refreshments, and wear suitable outdoor clothing and footwear as you will be in close proximity to a (very hot!) furnace throughout the day.
The booking page will be linked here when details for 2021 sessions are confirmed.
We have several years experience in running experimental demonstrations, workshops and outreach events. Examples of activities we can offer include:
Iron smelts, copper smelts and bronze casts using techniques based on archaeological evidence
Copper-smithing and brooch-making sessions
Replicating ancient pottery-making techniques including workshops for paddle-built, coil-built and wheel-thrown pots
We charge reasonable rates in order to cover the cost of materials and staff, with reduced fees possible for schools, charities, and youth organisations. If you have any queries please contact archaeomaterials@sheffield.ac.uk.
