Match review vs Manchester Tyrants

1 March 2017

Due to the importance of the game for both teams facing a relegation battle, it took a slow start with both defensive sides forcing turnovers and much of the first quarter action consisted of strong defence and punting for territory. However, Manchester were first on the board, converting a long drive with a passing touchdown. Converting the extra point put the score to 0–7.

Meanwhile the sabres offence struggled to move the ball and Manchester completed another touchdown and two point conversion before half time. Despite giving away penalties making their job harder, the final seconds of the half saw the sabres offence drive the ball into Manchester territory where they were stopped just inches from the goal line. The score sits at 0–15 as the half time whistle goes.

The second half started in a similar way to the first with both teams trading punts. A great day with the boot from kicker Rowan Huggins pushes Manchester deep into their own territory and pressure from the defensive line force a fumbled snap which was recovered in the end zone by Manchester for a safety. Despite points on the board, the offence still struggled to move the chains and another turnover allowed the Manchester offence to capitalise on defensive mistakes as several completed passes puts them into the end zone again.

The score sits at 2-21 going into the third quarter. Although the sabres often rely on special teams success, a poor kick return put them in a poor position and a forced fumble and turnover by Manchester saw the sabres in a dangerous position. Utilising their strong passing game, Manchester put yet another six points on the board but with the two point conversion stopped short, the score reached 2–28. Aware that another touchdown could cost them their spot in Division 1 football, the Sabres were able to hold Manchester out until the full time whistle, and avoid relegation. Another disappointing loss brings the regular season to an end and its back to the drawing board before Varsity in just a few weeks time.
