Club History

Founding of the club

Nickname

The Sheffield University team went without a nickname for almost all of its first year of existence. Various names were considered including:

  • Steelmen (Steelers was already the name of Sheffield’s ice hockey team)

  • Sentinels

  • Fighting Spoons

  • Supersonics (‘Sonics for short)

  • Marshalls (Who could have suggested that one?)

Eventually, club founder Damian Marshall came up with the name Sabres for a team based in a city famous for its steel and blades.

Club logo

The Sabres logo displays two crossed sabres beneath a “U” and “S” representing Sheffield University. The logo was inspired by logos from the University of Virginia and the University of Miami.

The font represents letters cut out by a sabre and is called Baphomet.

Uniform

The Sabres kit was first inspired by by the cities seven rivers and the famous local metal works industry with the colours blue and gold. These colours were sported by all Sabres for the best part of a decade before University regulation forced a change.

Today, the Sabres proudly wear the distinctive black and gold uniform which has become infamous in and around the University.

Fight song

Sabre Field

(To the tune of Mull of Kintyre)

Sabre Field, oh mist rolling in from the peaks,
My desire, is always to be there,
On Sabre Field.

The top of a mountain, with grass oh so green,
Leaves falling down it’s a beautiful scene,
A place where you’ll see our true colours revealed,
When the blue and the gold are on Sabre Field.

Sabre Field, oh mist rolling in from the peaks,
My desire, is always to be there,
On Sabre Field.

All opposition is put to the sword,
Our hunger for vict’ry will never be cured,
Fight for the Sabres and never will yield,
We’re the brave sons of Sheffield on Sabre Field.

Sabre Field, oh mist rolling in from the peaks,
My desire, is always to be there,
On Sabre Field.

In bright sunny weather, in rain or in snow,
We’ll always be ready to tackle our foe,
They’ll try to defeat us, our home is our shield,
We will never surrender on Sabre Field.

Sabre Field, oh mist rolling in from the peaks,
My desire, is always to be there,
On Sabre Field.

Sabre Field, oh mist rolling in from the peaks,
My desire, is always to be there,
On Sabre Field
