The Sheffield Sabres opened their season against the UCLan Rams this past Sunday with a strong outing, with a final score of 28–16 to the Sheffield Sabres.

Initially, the Sabres defence struggled to stop UCLan's fire-powered offense, with their #3 leading the charge. The Sabres' offense also struggled to get on the scoreboard, even after some long drives of consistent production driving down the field. The Rams went up by two scores early in the first quarter and memories of last year started to flood in. Almost immediately after the second score, the Sabres looked like a different outfit. A shutout defensive performance, combined with the offense firing on all cylinders, led the Sabres to dominate the rest of the game.

Rookie QB Sam Worrall looked like a veteran, making plays all over the field, including connecting with Joe Warriner who proceeded to outpace the UCLan defence for a huge first touchdown. Ruben Pare, who had a stellar game at running back with 100 all purpose, hard fought, yards scored the second touchdown for the Sabres. Shortly after, Bruno Schatten caught a tipped pass in the end zone for the Sabres third touchdown. Simon Arnold led by example with a consistent performance through four quarters. The offensive line, primarily made of rookies, didn’t falter the whole game and were the unsung heroes for the offense on Sunday.

The defense played equally as well. They came back from the shaky start to shut out the UCLan offense, with multiple three and outs, and a few red zone stops thanks to some big plays from DE Mo Ahmed, DT Connor Lloyd and the rest of the line. Liam Pratt recorded two picks with some great reads, consistently asking questions of the UCLan offense. The defensive backs had a wonderful outing, with no catches being caught out wide the whole game. Finally, George Foster recorded a pick six to seal the game off for the Sabres.
