Building Disaster Resilience to Seismic Hazards in Uganda

Funding Body: EPSRC

PI: Dr Zuhal OZDEMIR

Seismic risks in Uganda are fast increasing due to the rapidly rising population, urbanisation, and vulnerable building stock caused by a lack of building control and out-of-date seismic design guidelines. This project aims to initiate and build partnerships in the fields of earthquake risk assessment, management and resilience between the University of Sheffield (UoS) and academic institutions, and governmental and non-governmental organisations in Uganda. This research will improve the capabilities of these institutions and organisations in Uganda in understanding and managing seismic risks, enhance seismic safety and resilience of communities, train next generation of researchers, engineers and practitioners and help the country to achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
