Under the University’s General Regulations for First Degrees, you must meet certain requirements to progress to the next Level of study. Below is a summary of these requirements and does not override the Regulations in any way.
You can view the full General Regulations via the University Calendar:
All final grades (after the Spring exams) will be released online. Instructions on how to access your results online can be found here.
1. Psychology students need to pass all core Psychology modules as a prerequisite to progressing to the next level
Core Psychology modules at Level 1 are:
PSY1001 - Social Psychology I
PSY1002 - Cognitive Psychology I
PSY1003 - Neuroscience and Clinical Psychology I
PSY1004 - Developmental Psychology I
PSY1005 - Psychological Research Methodology I
Core Psychology modules at Level 2 are:
PSY2001 - Social Psychology II
PSY2002 - Cognitive Psychology II
PSY2003 - Neuroscience and Clinical Psychology II
PSY2004 - Developmental Psychology II
PSY2005 - Psychological Research Methodology II
2. In order to pass a core Psychology module the final grade of that module needs to be 40 or higher
The final grade is a weighted average of the grade for all assessments for that module taken during the academic year
Weightings of assessments for each module are specified on the respective Blackboard sites (Assessment content area)
3. Students need to have attempted but do not need to pass all assessments in a module to pass that module overall
If a student did not submit a piece of coursework or sit an exam, the result for this piece of assessment will be Not Complete (NC). You cannot pass a module when you have not completed one of the assessments
If a student completed an extenuating circumstances form for an assessment, this assessment will be considered Not Assessed (NA). The student may resit this assessment as a first attempt (i.e., the grade for that assessment will not be capped at 40)
All level 1 students must also take 20 credits of unrestricted modules in Level 1 (also referred to as optional modules)
Progression to Level 2 following failure of an unrestricted module will be assessed in Exam Board meetings at the end of the academic year
1. You can find out whether you need to resit an assessment via MyResults
If you failed a module, MyResults provides important information about what to do next
Do make sure you check this page at your earliest convenience after the results are released
2. The final grade for a core module that requires a resit is capped at 40, unless the original submission is marked as Not Assessed (NA)
If a student passes the resit, the student will progress to the next level in the following academic year
For example: if the student passes the resit examination in August 2023, they progress to the next level in the academic year of 2023/2024
University guidance on resit examinations (including fees for resits and arrangements for overseas students)
3. What if I fail the resit?
Level 1 students who fail the resit can take it again in the following academic year
For example: Level 1 students who failed a resit in August 2023 can take a second resit in 2024 and progress to Level 2 in 2024-2025
Level 1 students who fail the second resit will be withdrawn from the course
For example: Level 1 students who failed a resit in August 2022 and again in 2023 are withdrawn from the course
Level 2 students who fail the resit will be withdrawn from the course
For example: Level 2 students who fail a resit in August 2023 are withdrawn from the course
