PhD Workshop

Writing and Publishing Planning Research

The PhD workshop before the start of the main conference will offer doctoral students an opportunity to develop their writing skills, and is open to participants from first year of PhD onwards. It draws on training experience and resources developed in University of Sheffield (Urban Studies and Planning) and the University of the Witwatersrand (School of Planning and Architecture) through an RCUK-Newton funded exchange programme between our departments. It is focused on the specific challenges faced by planning researchers in writing and publishing.

The Workshop will take place on Monday 3rd September, with a welcome dinner on Sunday 2nd September, enabling PhD students to meet and work with researchers from a range of universities.

This day long event will be held in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning building on the University of Sheffield campus, enabling participants to present and discuss their work in a supportive and convivial setting.

Applications are invited from all students currently studying for a PhD - please complete this application form. Places are limited and participation is included in the Conference Registration Fee for successful applicants.

Programme:

9:30-12:30: Successful Writing in Planning: Presentations and Q&A with experienced writers on: what makes for good writing, why writers get stuck (and what to do about it), and getting writing published (drawing on the authors and journal editors).

12:30-13:30: Lunch (provided)

13:30-16:30: Writing workshop: An opportunity for participants to apply the morning’s learning to their own writing, with experienced supervisors in support. A final reflective session, on the craft and practice of writing, will identify strategies to develop their future writing.

Places will be limited, and on booking, participants will be asked to undertake a short preparatory task prior to arrival. This will identify a specific piece of their current writing (such as a PhD proposal, PhD chapter or a journal article) that they will develop within the workshop itself.

Applications for the workshop have now closed but we may be able to consider late submissions. If you're interested in applying please email PRC2018@sheffield.ac.uk for further details.
