We were lucky to receive additional funding for the project from Festival of the Mind, a University of Sheffield Festival that shares research with the general public. The festival facilitates collaboration with artists and artistic organisations, and we were lucky to be able to work with Theatre Deli to devise a performance based on the data from the project.
Nine young performers - Adam, Amelia, Colette, Cristal, Haochen, Jaycee, Jim, Marcus, and Matthew - were recruited to work together to bring the data to life. Together, we looked at what the young people all over the world had shared with us, and identified a series of themes. History, Diversity, Identity, Discrimination, Racism, Language, Culture, Change, and Life were the areas our young performers wished to explore. Through a series of workshops, we explored our voices, literally and figuratively.
The rehearsals were accompanied by two film makers, Kouer Niu and Xuan Zhu, who documented the rehearsal process, as well as filming the final performance. The summer holidays present a big challenge, since we can't really carry on rehearsing during this period, so we'll pick up rehearsals again in September, just in time for the performance on 22nd September. Check out future blogs for an update on Festival of the Mind, and the films coming out of the project.
