Having been a student at the University of Sheffield since 2015, Ben Jolly achieved a BSc in Physics and an MSc in Materials Science & Engineering.
Ben undertook his doctorate as part of the Advanced Metallic Systems CDT, exploring novel analytical methods for assessing local environments in multicomponent systems. Encompassing a number of specialised materials - including high-entropy alloys - such systems are of potential significance to the future of the nuclear and aerospace industries.
Since leaving the group, Ben is now the Research and Business Engagement Officer supporting the Modelling and Simulation Research theme at Royce

Kavi Sharma was an Advanced Metallics CDT student working on the assessment of damage in nuclear materials using Convolutional Multiple Whole Profile (CMWP) methods. He was supervised by the National Nuclear Laboraties (NNL) and the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA).

Yao pursued his doctoral studies at Chalmers University of Technology (Sweden) from 2022-2025 His work focussed on quantitative characterisation of local lattice distortions (LLDs) in bcc-structured refractory high-entropy alloys using total scattering techniques. By using neutron and synchrotron source combined with pair distribution function analysis, Yao was able to quantify LLDs in these alloys and elucidate their structural origins.

Luke was part of the group as a second year materials science undergraduate, with research interests in nuclear materials, researching candidate high entropy alloys for nuclear fusion, as a part of the SURE scheme. His placement primarily involved sample preparation and characterization, as a part of a larger effort to probe the effect of short range order on radiation damage tolerance. Outside of the lab, Luke was the captain of the Materials Science football team (FCCFC), annoys his flatmates by playing the drums and enjoys cooking.
Luke has recently moved to London to undertake a PhD programme of study
