Effectively Teaching Mathematics as a Postgraduate

University of Sheffield

Date : 25/05/2023

Introduction

This one-day conference aims to encourage new and experienced mathematics postgraduate demonstrators to engage students, learn to self-criticise and gain confidence in their teaching. Postgraduates often lead small classes with an expectation that being confident in the mathematics is enough to teach successfully. The sessions aim to give demonstrators new skills and encourage conversations of already developed skills, from structuring classroom expectations to helping demonstrators reflect on their teaching using a toolkit of ideas.

In academia, many successful researchers hold lectureships with little teaching training. We hope this workshop will help postgraduate students transition to an academic career by allowing them to explore teaching and learning issues.

This workshop has been organised and developed using ideas and feedback from the community of postgraduate demonstrators at the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Sheffield. It is part of the IMA Higher Education Teaching and Learning Series 2020.

This workshop has been postponed due to the outbreak of Covid 19 and will be taking place on the 25th of May 2023.

IMA Higher Education Teaching and Learning Series 2020

This conference is part of a series of workshops funded by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA), and has been deferred to 25/05/2023 as a consequence of Covid and logistical problems. There are additional fantastic workshops in the 2022/23 series which are well considering.  All workshops in the series are free to attend but require booking a place.

The organisers for the Sheffield conference are Brad Ashley, Poppy Jefferies, Matt Lennard, Wodu Majin, Constantinos Papachristoforou, Fionntan Roukema, Dimitrios Roxanas, Rosie Shewell Brockway and Markus Szymik, and is funded by an IMA grant awarded to Natasha Ellison in 2019, with additional support from the University of Sheffield.
