Learning objectives are provided below to give you a better understanding of what you are expected to know, we'll refer back to these as we go.
1. Describe the normal position of the heart within the chest cavity, relating it particularly to the rib cage and sternum.
2. Recognise and describe the major vessels that lie inside the chest and know their positions relative to each other.
3. Identify the apex and base of the heart and the chambers that form them.
4. Recognise the main features of the heart on a plain posterior/anterior x-ray and appreciate those parts of the heart that are not evident from this perspective.
5. Recognise and describe the 4 chambers of the heart.
6. Recognise and describe the 4 main valves of the heart and appreciate when, and by what means they open and close.
7. Describe the location, arrangement and function of the chordae tendinae and the papillary muscles.
8. Locate the fossa ovalis and the ligamentum arteriosum and understand their purpose.
9. Locate and trace the 2 main coronary arteries and their major brances and know which regions of the heart each one supplies.
10. Identify the SA, AV nodes and interventricular septum and appreciate their significance.
