At the University of Sheffield, the Herbert Hughes Fund has enabled students to enhance their studies along the years by supporting diverse cultural activities and events, such as the annual play and the concert. These offer students the opportunity to engage with Hispanic culture beyond the classroom environment. In addition to these, students also have the opportunity to enhance their cultural awareness first-hand by travelling abroad. The university recognises that cultural awareness has an invaluable impact on students’ university experiences and academic development. Along the years, bursary holders and winners of the Herbert Hughes Travel Grant have enhanced their learning experience by visiting a Spanish or Portuguese-speaking country. The Fund has also been invaluable with enabling Hispanic Studies students with valuable work experience and expertise through placements. You can learn about these by clicking on the "Funded Activities" menu tab above, and choosing from the list.

At Sheffield Hallam University, students from the International Business with Spanish course at Sheffield Hallam University have benefited from the Herbert Hughes bursaries and final year prizes since 2010. These awards recognize our students' academic excellence in Spanish language-learning and their engagement with Spanish culture. The generous support of the Herbert Hughes Fund has been particularly beneficial to enhance our students' experience of the country during their compulsory study and work placements in Spain. However, the impact of both the bursaries and prizes goes beyond their monetary value, notably increasing students' motivation towards their Spanish course and raising their academic and future career aspirations - which is simply invaluable.
