Professor Nicholas G. Round, Consultant Director (1938-2021)

Professor Round was a graduate of Pembroke College, Oxford University, where he later obtained a DPhil. From 1962 to 1972 he taught Spanish first as Lecturer and then as Reader at Queen's University, Belfast, before going to the University of Glasgow for 22 years as Stevenson Professor of Hispanic Studies.

He came to Sheffield as Hughes Professor of Hispanic Studies in 1994. In 1996 he was elected a Fellow of the British Academy. He was Director of Research for the Pérez Galdós Editions Project between 1996 and 2003 and President of the Asociación de galdosistas (the AIG) in 1999.

He published widely on Galdós and other early modern novelists. He translated Torquemada en la hoguera (Torquemada in the Fire (Glasgow, 1985) and the play Realidad (Broadcast, BBC Radio 4, 1975).

Professor Geoffrey W. Ribbans, Consultant Director (1927-2022)

Professor Ribbans graduated from The King's College, London. He lectured at Queen's University of Belfast, the University of St Andrews and the University of Sheffield before being appointed Gilmour Professor of Spanish at the University of Liverpool. He left Liverpool in 1978 to take up his current position as William R Kenan Jr. Professor of Hispanic Studies at Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, USA.

He was appointed Honorary Professor of Hispanic Studies at the University of Sheffield in 1994 and became the Project's Consultant Director in April 1996. In May 1998 he came to Sheffield to give the second Annual Pérez Galdós Lecture.

Professor Ribbans was the English-speaking world's leading galdosista and he wrote a number of books on Galdós, including:

  • Conflicts and conciliations: the evolution of Galdós's 'Fortunata y Jacinta' (West Lafayette, Ind., Purdue University Press, 1997).

Dr Rhian Davies, Project Director from 2003-

Dr Davies graduated from The Queen's College, Oxford University in 1990. After working as a Translator for the Civil Service in London, she returned to Oxford to work on a DPhil under the supervision of Dr John Rutherford ('La España Moderna: The cultural review and Spain, 1889 to 1914)'.

She was a Laming Junior Fellow at The Queen's College, Oxford from 1994 to 1996 before moving to Sheffield to take up the post of HEFCE/HRB Institutional Fellow for the Galdós Editions Project in 1996. She became became Director of Research for the project in 2003 and is now Senior Lecturer in Hispanic Studies at the University of Sheffield.
