Prior to the enrolment of candidates for postgraduate research degrees in the Faculty of Health, a description of the proposed research project must undergo peer review. This is to ensure all projects are both suitable for a PhD/MD and feasible to be completed within the tuition fee-paying period (more information on this can be found here). Please note, if tuition fees cover less than the recommended 3.5 - 4 years (7 - 8 years part time), you will be required to obtain approval from your Head of School using the Faculty of Health Approval Form for Lower Tuition Fee Paying Period.Â
Staff candidates wishing to apply for MD/PhD by publication should refer to the information here.
For all other applications, supervisors are requested to provide information on the proposed project using the Faculty of Health Project Proposal Form. If the applicant has applied with their own project, the expectation is that the supervisor will have had some input into this and the supervisor should submit the Project Proposal Form. If the project has already undergone external peer review as a PGR project, and been judged suitable for a studentship, a copy of the successful application and award letter should be provided as evidence.
Supervisors must also provide details of the student, state why they consider them suitable to study for a research degree, and describe the arrangements for supporting both the student and the costs of the research. All applications to be considered for an offer will need to include a Faculty of Health PGR Student Recruitment Form.
An outline of the recruitment process is below for information. Advertised projects will need to provide evidence of project review prior to them being advertised. Self funded or sponsored students often apply ad hoc. It is not necessary for the project to have been reviewed prior to the candidate being interviewed or assessed for their suitability for a PGR degree. However, all applications will require project and candidate approval before an offer will be made.
