British Heart Foundation (BHF): Discovery Research Early Career Fellowship
Aims: To fund exceptional early career researchers. This scheme will provide candidates a platform to broaden their research horizons and start developing their own distinct research leadership. This fellowship scheme is open to all non-clinician scientists working on a cardiovascular research project
Eligibility: Early career, last year of their PhD or up to 4 years from the date of PhD award letter
Frequency: Twice per year with deadlines in April and September

British Heart Foundation (BHF): Clinical Early Career Research Fellowship
Aims: To support PhD/MDRes qualified resident doctors in higher specialist clinical training to secure protected postdoctoral research time
Eligibility: Resident doctors in higher speciality training and hold a NTN and PhD or MDRes
Frequency: Once per year with a deadline in January
Duration: 4 years part time (or the equivalent of 2 years full time), alongside clinical training
Funding: Salary (50%FTE), a research post, research costs, equipment, training and travel fund

Aims: To provide long-term support to high-potential scientists as they transition to independence, leading their own research projects and teams. This fellowship scheme is open to all non-clinician scientists working on a cardiovascular research project
Eligibility: Need to have at least 4 years post-doctoral experience.
Frequency: Twice per year with deadlines in April and September.

Aims: To provide long-term support to outstanding clinical researchers, as they transition to independence, leading their own research projects and teams
Eligibility: PhD (or MD/MDRes) plus NTN and at least 2 years completed specialist training, but usually no more than 2 years after CCT.
Frequency: Twice per year with deadlines in January and July.
Duration: 7 years

Cancer Research UK (CRUK): Career Development Fellowship
Aims: Supports new group leaders who do not have a salaried independent position to establish their independent research group
Eligibility: Postdoc, no salaried independent position, to establish your own independent research group

Duration 6 years
Funding: Maximum £1.5m for salary, research costs, equipment and up to two research posts
Cancer Research UK (CRUK): Clinician Scientist Fellowship
Aims: Supports clinician scientists who have gained a higher research degree, have some postdoctoral experience and are ready to make the first step towards developing their own research niche
Eligibility: MD/PhD, has a national training number with plans for Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) by the end of fellowship. Mustn’t hold a permanent academic position, or have held a similar postdoctoral fellowship (except an NIHR Clinical lectureship)

Funding: Up to £1m to include salary, research costs, equipment costs up to £25k total.
Cancer Research UK (CRUK): Clinical Future Leaders Fellowship
Aims: Supports clinician scientists to transition to research independence and leadership in their field of cancer research. These long-term fellowships provide talented clinician scientists with the flexibility and freedom to establish themselves as clinical academic leaders
Eligibility: MD/PhD, has obtained Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) and will hold consultant status or equivalent by start of fellowship. Mustn’t hold a position with a fully-funded salary (eg lecturer, tenured or tenure track position), or have previously held another substantial multi-year fellowship or award
Frequency: Two rounds per year closing in March and October (outline)
Duration 7 years
Funding: Up to £2.5m to include salary (requires host organisation contribution), research staff, equipment costs up to £50k total.
Aims: Provides an opportunity for Fellows to maximise the outputs and impact of their PhD research for those in the immediate postdoctoral stage of their career
Eligibility: Via White Rose DTP, up to 12 months postdoctoral experience, fellowship activities must be based at least 50% within social sciences. Only open to the Division of Human Communication Sciences, Population Health and Psychology.

Foundation for the Sociology of Health & Illness: Mildred Blaxter postdoctoral fellowship
Aims: These fellowships provide support for people who have recently completed a PhD in the area of sociology of health and illness, to enable them to develop a programme of work related to their thesis

Aims: Provides funding for registered healthcare professionals to reacquire research skills
Eligibility: Be a registered healthcare professional, PhD graduate working outside of research, usually five or more years, show plans to pursue a research career and be at an appropriate point in your clinical training to undertake the fellowship.

Eligibility: Must be an experienced postdoctoral health and care professional, doctor or dentist who has completed relevant pre-registration training and doesn’t yet hold a professorial post
Frequency: Once per year opening in October, internal university-wide process prior to deadline

Aims: Provides the opportunity for outstanding early-career researchers to build an independent research career for researcher working within the Royal Society’s remit of natural sciences
Eligibility: Between 3 and 8 years postdoc experience, do not hold a permanent post at a university, no previous fellowship providing an opportunity to establish an independent research group, and do not hold independent researcher status.

Must not have held a tenured position for more than 2 years in the host institution
