Rob is a senior lecturer and the cluster lead for Molecular Microbiology in Sheffield. He has been interested in the Clostridia since starting as a postdoc in the lab of Prof Neil Fairweather at Imperial College London in 2005. He moved to Sheffield to establish the Clostridial Cell Biology group in 2013. Outside of work, Rob is a father of two (4 if you include 12 year old Cavalier King Charles Toby and Labrador puppy Pip!) - Caitlin (7) who has Angelman Syndrome and Jack (3) who has a mild Paw Patrol obsession.

Biophysicist postdoc working on imaging bacterial spores through Atomic Force Microscopy in collaboration with the Bullough and Hobbs groups (School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences). Abigail joined the lab after finishing her PhD in Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of Leeds in 2024, focused on diffusion in the extracellular matrix. Outside of the lab, she enjoys rock climbing and historical fiction novels.
Anne is a PhD student in the Microbial Physics group and the Clostridial Cell Biology group here at the University of Sheffield. She moved to Sheffield to start a PhD in February 2022 after finishing her Physics bachelor’s at Elon University in North Carolina, where she researched magnetic materials for applications in magnetic hyperthermia. She now investigates the dynamics of live spore germination in Clostridium sporogenes using phase and fluorescence microscopy. She is also passionate about physics outreach and education and out of hours, loves wild swimming and watercoloring.
Anirudh is a PhD student at the lab. His initial research at the National Institute of Science Education and Research in India centred on Drosophila, bacterial cytoskeletal and plasmid segregation proteins. He later shifted his focus to phages, working with them briefly at the Max Planck Institute of Evolutionary Biology before using them as the core of his PhD research. He now works on mutating C. difficile phages and understanding their mechanism using Cryo-EM. Outside of the lab, you will find him hiking in the peak district, mountain biking, gaming, or jamming with a piano.
Lilia is a PhD student looking at the stringent response and sporulation in Clostridioides difficile. Outside of work, Lilia is an avid fencer, pub quizzer, and music fan.
Conrad is a PhD student between the schools of Physics and Biosciences, looking at optimising the mechanism of killing bacteria on nanostructured surfaces. He is the proud caretaker of two rabbits (Bubble and Squeak) and two giant African land snails (Sneil and Slimon). When away from science, he enjoys drag, foraging and all manner of arts and crafts.
Isabel is an MBiolSci student looking into vancomycin resistance in C. difficile. Outside of labs you'll find her hosting a radio show, performing in musicals and reading Stephen King novels.
Victoria is an MBiolSci student investigating vancomycin resistance in C. difficile. Outside of labs you’ll find her out on a run or making progress on a giant cross stitch. If she’s got headphones on, she’ll either be listening to hip hop or a history podcast.
