What is the Civil Service? What do they do?
If you’re interested in careers that have real impact, consider a placement with the Civil Service!
These placements are a unique opportunity to see what the Civil Service is like, gain hands-on experience to kick start a career in public administration and be part of the evolving Sheffield Policy Campus.
Placement opportunities exclusively for students of University of Sheffield, University of Leeds, and Sheffield Hallam University, with Department for Work and Pensions and Department for Education - we want to help you make a successful application!
Opportunities will be advertised on the Civil Service Jobs website by mid-February, with a deadline of the end of February (dates will be confirmed when the vacancy goes live). Please check eligibility criteria carefully before you apply.
Last year the Social Sciences Employability team provided support with applications and interview preparation - as a result 17 students were offered placements. Successful students made a real contribution to the teams they were placed with - including leading meetings, drafting ministerial briefings, and researching for policy development, along with opportunities to shadow senior colleagues.
Application workshop - 19 February, 2-3pm, Workroom 1, the Wave. Bring a draft application to review with our team and colleagues from the Civil Service - helping you craft your personal statement and answer any other questions about the application process.
