The winter-school will be held virtually and will include up to four hours of contact time per day across five days.

The school will cover

  • Two presentations from keynote speakers Daniel Mullensiefen and Glenn Schellenberg

  • Four presentations from the organisers including from Annarita Addessi, Maria Chelkowska-Zacharewicz, Suvi Saarikallio, Marc Thompson, and Renee Timmers.

  • Group work led by the winter school organisers on a topic related to the overarching theme of 'Musical Ability'.


The presentations and group work zoom in on particular issues and research innovations in the understanding of musical ability. These include

  • Cultural understanding of musical ability

  • Measurement and observation in research and educational contexts

  • Understanding musical ability as embodied, affective and multisensory.

For the group work, you will work with others on a particular research issue with the aim to develop insight and understanding of this issue as well as develop and practice techniques to investigate it. Relevant guidance and training will be offered, and opportunities created for debate and collaborative work.
