Choosing to be a member of The Company, in any capacity, is a serious commitment.
Theatre is an exceptionally collaborative, interconnected endeavor. Whether working on choreography, scene work, costume construction, or scenic builds, company members have a responsibility towards their fellow students to be present. When one student is absent, it prevents other students from being able to execute on their task as it was intended, hindering the learning, development, and confidence of others in their respective work.
All conflicts are required to be submitted before interviews and auditions. All absences that are submitted before interviews and auditions are Approved Conflicts, because we are able to be intentional far ahead of time about scheduling. All absences that are submitted after interviews and auditions are Unapproved Conflicts, as they affect the greater calendar and rehearsal plan, and affect other students ability to accomplish their respective goals. Students found to be habitually submitting Unapproved Conflicts are at risk of dismissal from the current production.
We understand that emergencies arise. If your student has an unapproved conflict arise, please have them let us know as soon as possible.
Actors should assume that they are required to be at all rehearsals. Crew members should assume that they will be called on Mondays and Wednesdays, Saturday set builds, and for all of tech week. Students will likely not be called for this full amount of time - the detailed Weekly Call is posted by Friday evening for the upcoming week by our Student Company Manager. If your actor is not listed on the weekly call, they are then free to schedule other things during that time.
(NOTE: We are not able to schedule out farther ahead than this. This is in order to accommodate the ever present need to re-puzzle out the rehearsal plan in order to account for unexpected student illness/unexpected absences, or the speed at which students are able successfully and confidently execute the work, which will differ from week to week. In order to prioritize the student experience, please refer to the Weekly Call to know if your student is needed.)
Please see below the full detailed outline of our policies and procedures relating to attendance, appropriate behavior, and safety. Additionally, for reference to other SHS Organization attendance policies, please see the excerpt from the SHS Athletics Handbook immediately below.
Team Absences
"Every athlete should be present at all scheduled practices and competitions. Missing any part
of practices or competitions may be held against the student-athlete. If families know of a
potential conflict please contact the head coach or the athletic director to confirm the dates of
practices and contests.
It is extremely important that a coach be notified if a student is not going to attend a practice or
a game. The athlete should talk to the coach (in person if at all possible) as soon as they see a
conflict. Practice is where plans for upcoming contests are devised and perfected. The coaches
in our program expect their athletes to be present at all team-related activities. Each coach will
explain their policy for missed practices and/or games at the team’s preseason meeting.
Suspension or dismissal from a team may take place as a result of unexcused absences.
There are some conflicts that will be excused with advanced notice such as academic help,
tests, make-ups, illness, family emergencies and religious holidays. Prior notification is strongly
recommended and expected. Student-athletes should use Eagle Block effectively to receive
academic support and complete work in order to avoid missing practices or contests.
If a student-athlete is injured and cannot participate they should still attend all practices where
possible. In addition to this they should regularly communicate with the athletic trainer.
School/Family Vacations, Extended Absences
Every team member is expected to be present for all team practices and games. Because of
scheduling parameters, many of our teams practice and/or play during scheduled vacations.
Students who plan to be absent for an extended period of time due to vacation or a planned
extended absence; should discuss this situation with the coach prior to trying out for the team.
The coach’s discretion will be used in determining the consequences for such extended
absences.
Family vacations are important parts of family time but parents should remember that their child
has made a commitment to a team. If a student-athlete misses time due to a family vacation the
coach may hold the student-athlete out of competitions until the coach feels that the athlete is
able to participate safely. When an athlete has a break in training it can take time for the
individual to get back to the level they were at before the missed time."
Participation Conduct Agreement
Must be signed by a guardian and submitted within one week of the students first production of the year. Students who do not submit the agreement in a timely manner may be dismissed from rehearsals, and eventually the production.
