Parent / Guardian Roles & Tips for Successful Remote Learning

Tips for Parents / Guardians

  • Attendance: Ensure student attends all required virtual meetings. Be on time for logging on at the beginning of the day and after breaks, set a timer if necessary. The student's Google Meet link for each class/teacher is located at the top the student's Google Classroom(s). Help: Accessing Meet in Google Classroom

  • Daily Schedule: It is important for your child to attend school EVERY day!! Create a daily schedule for your student to follow that includes getting outside off the computer and socializing in some manner. Have them brush their teeth, shower, get dressed, eat breakfast, etc. just like they were going to school. They need a good night's sleep, whole foods & good nutrition to learn effectively!

  • It may take time for your child to adjust to this type of learning, so please be patient. We are all learning to work in a new way. How to handle failures and frustrations are an important life skill to be modeled for our students.

  • Create a time and place for school work and try to limit distractions. Remove as many distractions as possible. (i.e. - pets, toys, siblings)

  • Create a workspace and have school supplies ready and nearby.

  • Make sure someone is available at home to assist the student if needed--this person is the student's "learning coach". Different aged students will need different supports.

  • If your child becomes frustrated, have them take a break from the task and come back to it later.

  • Mistakes are a part of learning, so please allow you child to do the work.

  • Remind your child to turn in work in Google Classroom.

  • Encourage your child to actively participate and complete all assignments.

  • Remind your child to connect with other students! Students are used to being in a classroom and enjoy the ability to get together and ask questions of their fellow classmates, especially if they are struggling with a particular topic.

  • Reach out to your child’s teacher or school counselor if you have questions or concerns. We are all in this together!

  • Parent Role: Help your student with organization and making sure they are turning in their assignments and participating in the live online lessons.

  • Student work: Have the student show you the work they have completed for the day and show you around their different Google Classrooms. Many times students do the work, but forget to "Turn-in" the assignment in Google Classroom.

  • Communication: Please be proactive in your communication with the student's teachers.

  • Grades: During this time in a different mode of learning, please be sure to check Skyward frequently to ensure consistent communication between students, teachers and you, the parent(s)/guardian(s).

Video Conferencing Do’s and Don'ts

  • Be on time (5 minutes early)

  • Be kind!

  • The use of the camera is highly recommended when engaging in classroom discussions. If the student’s Chromebook is slow, muting the camera is a quick fix.

  • Remember that when the webcam is on for your child, the class can see what is happening in the background behind your child. Use the”Blur” background setting in Google Meet.

  • Mute you microphone, unless you are speaking.

    • Google Meet shortcut <ctrl>+<d>

    • When a student wears headphones, they can’t hear background noise in the house, but the rest of the class possibly can.

  • Help the student use the chat appropriately.

  • Help them avoid side conversations online and off.

  • Use an appropriate background and proper lighting (make sure others can see your face.) Google Meet has a change or blur the background feature.

  • Don’t interrupt others - treat it as a normal conversation.

  • Speak clearly in an appropriate volume.

  • Keep body movement to a minimum or mute your camera if you have to adjust something in the students workspace.
