Frequently Asked Questions

What are the hours of the Wilson Personalized Learning Academy (WPLA)?

Hours vary based on the schedule outlined in the Individualized Learning Plan. In person classes and support services are scheduled between regular school hours, 7:55 - 2:35. Internships, apprenticeships, school-to-work and college classes may be scheduled during or outside of regular school hours.

What does a typical day in the WPLA look like?

There is no typical day in the WPLA as each student has a unique schedule. That schedule may include online classes, in person classes, college classes, internship or school to work. Students with online courses may work in the WPLA classroom for a few periods a day, all day or not at all. Some students will be in the school building while others may learn at home and through experiential learning placements. The beauty of the WPLA is the ability to craft the best schedule for each individual student and circumstances.

What type of student is most successful in the WPLA?

All students can experience success in the WPLA! Programming is designed to meet students where they are and help them to move forward at the best pace for them. The keys to success are high daily attendance (in person or by logging on virtually), meeting daily assignment goals regularly, strong motivation to complete work, and being able to ask for help when needed or accept it when it is offered.

What courses are available in the WPLA?

Students have access to the full range of Wilson High School course offerings as well as select online offerings provided by Wilson teachers and Edgenuity teachers. Additionally students may enroll in college courses, complete an Honors Internship or receive credit through the School-to-Work program.

What do students like about WPLA?

Some like the ability to work at their own pace. Others prefer the smaller classroom environment with academic support. Most students share that they like the organization of the online classes. If they are absent, they can either work from home or immediately jump back into learning upon their return. They don't have to try to talk to several teachers to figure out what they missed. Students are seeing success and that feels good!
