Reading Recovery

We desire that all Reading Recovery children will be successful readers who enjoy reading. The purpose of Reading Recovery is to provide individualized support in order to accelerate students' progress. 75% of Reading Recovery students who have a complete series of lessons, successfully finish the program reading at a similar level to their peers.

What parents should expect:

Your child will bring home a reading bag containing materials that should be used daily for homework practice.

The materials may include:

  • familiar reading books
  • flash cards
  • a cut-up sentence to reconstruct
  • word work materials
  • alphabet books

How parents can help their child:

  • Enjoy sitting next to your child as he/she reads to you. This should be a happy quiet time to read together every day.
  • Talk about the stories after your child reads.
  • Read the cut-up sentence story from the envelope so your child can reconstruct it
  • Praise your child. Encourage all the efforts your child makes when reading a book.
  • If your child is unsure of a word, wait a moment and then suggest your child try something. Sometimes telling a child to try the sentence again is helpful, or asking them what makes sense, looks right, or sounds right.
  • If your child has tried, but can't solve the word, ask him/her to reread and tell them the word.

Please contact your child's Reading Recovery teacher if you have any questions.
