Congratulations to all the athletes that participated on the track team this year. 49 years in a row is quite the feat. Next year should be a big one!
Congratulations to all the volleyball teams this year. Three teams had undefeated seasons (Jr. Men, Jr. Women, and Sr. Women) and we capped it all off with 3 City Championships! Congrats to the players and coaches of the Jr. Women, Sr. Women, and Sr. Men's team on their successful ending!
Congratulation to the Women's Flag Football for their City Championship! In the sports inagural season they came up just short and took home the silver. this year they left no doubt and capped off their undefeated season with a great game over a solid Lillian Osborne team!

Strathcona Open House is happening on March 2nd, please join us for our virtual meetings and presentation. More information can be found on the Open House page.
Unfortunately, there is no news concerning any return to athletics. Although the AHS and GoA are allowing some gyms to be open (with heavy precautions), the EPSB district is not allowing any extra-curricular sports. When we get permission, we will look to start some basketball (depending on the date). Thank you for your patience.
COVID-19 Response
Specifically, in relation to school sport, those directives include the following:
Outdoor team sports must also be limited to 10 people or fewer and 2 metre distancing must be maintained at all times.
ASAA Interpretation: As there are no outdoor ASAA sports in season right now, this point is moot.
Indoor group physical activities are prohibited unless:
the activity involves students at a school or post-secondary institution as part of an education program
the activity involves students at a post-secondary institution
ASAA Interpretation: No in school sport practices can occur as sport is not included in the “curricular” program in Alberta schools. Of course, as Physical Education classes are curricular, they can occur under AHS and school jurisdiction guidelines
Please refer to the GoA website or Alberta Biz Connect to make sure that you are up to date with all COVID-19 rules and regulations in Alberta. Some of the GoA and AHS rules may be more restrictive than what is currently posted on the ASAA website and those more restrictive rules must be followed.
Athletics will still be shut down indefinitely until further notice. With the AB government and AHS barring all activity, we will be reevaluating after Jan 21. Please follow Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/sconaathletics/) for the latest information as it comes.
The community of Strathcona has suffered a tremendous loss recently. It is with great sadness that we recognize the passing of our former science teacher, athletic director, administrator, and dear friend.
Ernie Lotz was an educator, builder, coach, and a great influencer to the many programs and coaches that were lucky enough to be around him. His personality matched his stature, and he was able to command a room and conversation wherever he went. The parents, teachers, students, and athletes all gave back what they received from Ernie - Love.
When he retired in 2017, the Athletics program named an award in his honor. The “Ernie Lotz Athletics Contributor Award” is given annually to a coach, builder, or contributor who has continually supported, built, and nurtured sporting opportunities at Scona for a sustained period of time. Nobody believed in Strathcona High School and its students more than Ernie. Nobody saw the benefits of sport and youth more than Ernie, and if you had time to listen, no one could better explain to you why Strathcona is the best place to be.
As a student, you may not have known him, but his presence can be seen and felt throughout our school - our tournaments, the renovations, the classrooms, the office, and the gyms.
Ernie, it was great to work with you for many years. You have positively influenced so many people over your years at Strathcona. Thanks for all the amazing memories and for teaching us all the passion of being a Lord.
Once a Lord, always a Lord.
As of Jan 4th, all extra-curricular athletics is still shut down until further notice. This is an EPSB administration decision. Right now the focus in on mitigation of any further risk until we can get the numbers down. We will look to start basketball tryouts as soon as we are able to resume.
As of Nov 13th, all extra-curricular athletics was shut down for a two week period. This was a joint decision by the AHS and EPSB administration. Volleyball intramurals is now finished, and basketball tryouts will hopefully resume in Dec. Please check the COVID response page for updated information on each sport. We will be allowed to continue extra-curriculars on Nov 30.
In continued consultation with a variety of organizations including ASAA, Alberta Health Services, Government of Alberta and multiple school boards, the Metro Executive has made the following decision with regards to all Metro sports/activities:
As of October 21st, athletics will remain status quo; we are still working on the possibility and feasibility of coordinating a mini-league for volleyball. Schools that choose to are permitted to continue their in-house programming, which could include intramurals, tryouts, practices, scrimmages, and training within their own buildings. The next communication will be made no later than November 6.
In continued consultation with a variety of organizations including ASAA, Alberta Health Services, Government of Alberta and multiple school boards, the Metro Executive has made the following decision with regards to all Metro sports/activities:
As of October 7th, Metro Athletics will be taking an additional two weeks to further formulate protocol and guidelines that can be used toward implementation of mini-leagues. Schools that choose to are permitted to continue their in-house programming, which could include intramurals, tryouts, practices, scrimmages, and training within their own buildings. We will continue to work and communicate with governing bodies so that we may provide the safest environments for schools, student athletes and families. Our next statement will be released by no later than October 21st.
Please note that the AHS has strongly recommended that you limit your cohorts to no more than 3: your core household, your school, and one other sport or social cohort. So please keep this in mind when decided whether you or your child will join one of our school sport cohorts.
Great Job to those passing along the Cross-Country times! Keep them coming. It's never too late to get it in. Please email Joshua.Spronk@epsb.ca with your full name, category (Jr/Int/Sr), time, and which course it was for!

Although the district has allowed athletics to resume in a small fashion, there are still many barriers. Please read our response in the COVID-19 Response page.
Due to Covid-19, we have unfortunately been forced to cancel the Scona Classic and Jr. High Invitational. We will update as we hear more from the province.
We are awaiting word from the school district and AHS about continuation of sports and athletics!
Congratulations to the Scona Cross Country team - 45 City Championships and their second consecutive Provincial Championship!
This has been a very big year for Strathcona Volleyball. 3 City Championships and a Silver Provincial medal for the Sr. Men. With a strong group coming up, we look forward to a lot of success next year!
