What you'll learn in English
The English curriculum in Alberta covers language and literacy skills, critical thinking and analysis, and media and digital literacy. Students develop reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills through various texts, and learn to think critically about content, structure, and style. They also develop media and digital literacy skills to navigate and evaluate different forms of media. The curriculum encourages students to make connections between texts and the world, analyze perspectives, and use media responsibly and ethically.
English 10
Analyze
Analyze and interpret diverse texts, develop advanced writing skills, engage in critical thinking and discussion, and explore complex themes and issues in literature and media.
English 20
Refine
Students further refine their language and literacy skills through advanced reading, writing, speaking, and listening activities, critically analyze and evaluate texts, and engage in thoughtful discussions.
English 30
Engage
Focuses on advanced language and literacy skills, critical analysis of texts, exploration of complex themes and issues, and in-depth discussions and reflections on literature and media.
Alberta Education Notes
Minimum requirement for an Alberta High School Diploma is English 30-1 or English 30-2.
Students require English 30-1 for most post-secondary study or schools.
