Before the movie hit theaters, we published my predictions for No Way Home. Here's what proved true- and what was off the mark
The long-awaited Spider-Man: No Way Home has finally been released: let's take a look and see if my pre-release theories were correct.
Many of Marvel fans' hopes for the movie came true , and the appearances of Daredevil, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's Spider-Men, and Venom rocked audiences. However, the full Sinister Six did not appear in the movie, despite some of the villains from the iconic group, including the Green Goblin, Electro, and Sandman, making an appearance. The only villains that were missing from the Six were the Vulture and Mysterio, who already made previous appearances in these Spider-Man movies. But these villains don't appear to be gone: it looks like The Vulture will make his return in the new Marvel and Sony movie “Morbius,” as he appears briefly in the trailer.
To the delight of Marvel fans, Daredevil made a short cameo in the new movie, appearing as Peter’s lawyer for a brief scene. Sadly, this was the only scene with Daredevil in the movie, and he did not help Spider-Man fight the Sinister Six, but the introduction of Daredevil into the modern Marvel cinematic universe is a significant moment for the future of the universe. For now, let’s move on to two other important characters who did help Spider-Man fight.
Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man (Peter 2) and Andrew Garfield's Spiderman (Peter 3) do in fact help Tom Holland's Spider-Man (Peter 1) fight the returning members of the Sinister Six, as Marvel fans had hoped. Peters 2 & 3 show up around the middle of the movie, and they immediately make a big impression. Fans in theaters went crazy when Peter 3 appeared, spawning a practical TikTok genre of Spider-Man: No Way Home theater reaction videos. The reappearances of these old Spideys was definitely the most hyped-up theory, and their appearances shook theaters, providing Marvel fans with plenty of Spider-Man nostalgia. The movie was also an opportunity for Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man, a hero who experienced mass box office failure in his day, to prove himself. There's a lot to talk about with the reintroduction of these old Spider-Men, but I'm getting off-track: let's move on to a certain anti-hero who also made waves with his appearance.
As Marvel fans had hoped, Venom did appear in the movie. However, many were disappointed with the way he was included- only in the mid-credits scene. The symbiotic quasi-hero makes an appearance when Eddie Brock (Venom) was accidentally transported to Mexico as a result of Dr. Strange’s spell. Brock is talking to a bartender in a restaurant, seeming confused and disoriented. After a few seconds, Brock is magically transported back to his universe. Unbeknownst to him, this happens as a result of Dr. Strange correcting his original spell, which occurs at the end of the movie. However, when Brock is magicked away, a small drop of Venom symbiote is left behind. This drop could have significant effects on the Marvel universe, with many Marvel fans eagerly awaiting a Spider-Man / Venom symbiotic relationship such as that which occurs in the comics. This movie introduced a lot of new elements into the universe, and fans will just have to wait and see how these small elements are developed into major storylines.
But not all of the theories proved true. There was a popular theory making the rounds among Spider-Man: No Way Home conversations that Doctor Strange would make an appearance as Mephisto. (For more information about Mephisto, read my Spider-Man: No Way Home theories story here.) But in contrast to expectations, Doctor Strange is just good old Doctor Strange in the movie. That doesn't mean that Mephisto won't appear in “Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness,” though, because in the comics Mephisto is connected to both Wanda and Doctor Strange.
Spider-Man: No Way Home proved to be one of my favorite Marvel movies and did not disappoint. The theory I was most excited to see come to life was the return of Tobey McGuire and Andrew Garfied, and I'm not alone: their appearances drew even more attention to an already-popular movie. This movie is far from the end, though- the many new story elements that it introduces promise a bright future both for Marvel's Phase Four and for Tom Holland's Peter Parker.
