Shandon Unified School District's Committment:

Shandon Joint Unified School District is committed to providing a quality education in a safe environment, which empowers students with the skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary for success.

Dr. Kristina Benson

Superintendent

Welcome to Shandon Joint Unified School District. I am proud to serve as the Superintendent of the District and as the High School Principal. As an educational leader, I enjoy being a part of the Shandon community. Shandon schools serve as the community hub for many activities and traditions that intimately involve the small, rural community in which it stands.

Shandon Joint Unified School District serves a large (in land size) rural portion of northern San Luis Obispo County and southern Monterey County. It is a district composed of three schools: Shandon Elementary (K-8), Parkfield Elementary School (one-room K-6 school), and Shandon High School (9-12). The demographics of Shandon Joint Unified School District reflect the socioeconomic levels in the community. Many of the families in the Shandon area are engaged in agricultural production as farm and ranch operators, vineyard managers and farm laborers. The District’s unique feature is its relatively small size which allows me to get to know our students and families as we all take part in schoolwide events.

Our District Mission Statement reflects the importance of being a good citizen and a good representative of Shandon schools now and in the future. It reads: Shandon Joint Unified School District is committed to providing a quality education in a safe environment which empowers students with the skills, knowledge, and attitude necessary for success. It is with this Mission Statement that we prepare our youth for futures in exciting careers such as agriculture, the military, secondary education and business.

Thank you for visiting our web page and perhaps you will visit our schools sites too.

Sincerely,

Dr. Kristina Benson

Title IX: Prohibiting Sex-Based Discrimination

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (“Title IX”) is a federal law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in all educational programs and activities, including athletic programs. No person shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity operated by SJUSD. Title IX protects all participants in SJUSD’s educational programs and activities, including students, parents, employees, and job applicants. SJUSD does not discriminate on the basis of sex. Discrimination on the basis of sex can include sexual harassment and sexual violence.

Our District Office of Education and the Title IX Coordinator are aware of and acknowledge the new Title IX regulations released on May 6, 2020 and effective as of August 14, 2020. Our Title IX team received training on these new regulations on August 21, 2020. We are in the process of reviewing and revising our Title IX policy and practices, which involves hearing from our stake-holders in order to implement a fair, thorough and impartial Title IX complaint process and SJUSD response. As always, if you want to report a sexual harassment incident, please reach out to our Title IX Coordinator, Sadie Howard, at:
