Coloring Page Contest

A new exhibit-related coloring page by Lauren Garvin of Snailberry Art will be released here on the first Friday of each month. Winners will be announced at the end of October and will receive a special prize!

Competition Age Groups:

  • 4 and under

  • 5-6

  • 7-8

  • 9-10

  • 11-12

  • 13+

To enter the contest, please send a photo of your child's finished page to education@shakerhistory.org with your name, your child's name, and your child's age. Entries will close on October 18, 2020.

Wild Flower Vase (Printable Activity)

(Suggested age 2-5)

Download the file to the left and print it out to send your child on a wild flower adventure! You can use a hole punch, tooth pick, or metal straw to puncture the paper and insert the wild flowers into the vase.

Talk: The History of the Village Garden Club

Friday, September 25, 2020 | 4-5pm

Join us at the Horseshoe Lake Park Cherry Tree Grove for a socially distanced in-person talk. Village Garden Club Historian Barbara Shockey will be presenting the rich history of the Village Garden Club and their impact on the Shaker Heights community. This event is free to the public, but space is limited to first-come first served. Folding chairs will be provided, but feel free to bring your own or a blanket to enjoy this al fresco talk!

Weekly vintage recipes posted from the Soups On! 10th Anniversary Village Garden Club Cook Book. This book was printed and published in 1940 to raise funds for the memorial rock at the Cherry Grove.

Orange Torte

This recipe requires a 9 inch baking pan and electric beater. Skill level: Intermediate

Ingredients:

  • 1 Cup Butter

  • 1 Cup Sugar

  • 2 Eggs (yolks and whites separated)

  • 1 Cup Sour Milk (Butter Milk)

  • 2.5 Cups Flour

  • Grated Rind of 2 Oranges

  • 1 teaspoon Baking Soda

  • 1 teaspoon Baking Powder

  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla

  • 1 Cup Nut Meats

  • 1 Cup Dates

  • Pinch of Salt

Instructions: Cream Butter and sugar and add beaten egg yolks. Add flour, sifted with soda, baking powder, and salt, alternately with sour milk. Add grated rind of oranges, nuts, dates, and vanilla. Fold in egg whites, beaten stiff. Bake in greased 9" square pan in a moderate oven for 1 hour. Remove from oven and pour over the following mixture:

1 Cup Sugar

3/4 Cup Orange Juice

Let cool and serve with whipped cream.

Avocado Cocktail

The difficulty of this recipe is described as easy, and requires a serving bowl and refrigerator space to keep cold until serving.

Ingredients:

  • 2-3 Ripe Hass Avocados

  • 1/2 cup Mayonnaise

  • Juice of 1 Orange

  • Juice of 1/2 Lemon

  • 1/4 cup Chili Sauce

  • 1/2 teaspoon finely chopped onion

  • 1 Hard boiled egg (Finely chopped)

Instructions: Combine and serve ice cold over diced avocado which has been chilled.

Cinnamon Buns

The difficulty of this recipe is described as hard, and requires a baking sheet and a rolling pin.

Ingredients:

  • 2 Cups Sifted all-purpose Flour

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1 Tablespoon Sugar

  • 4 Tablespoons of Shortening

  • 3/4 Cup Buttermilk

  • 1/4 Cup Sugar

  • 1/2 Teaspoon Cinnamon

Instructions: Sift flour once, measure and add baking soda, salt, sugar and sift again. Cut in shortening. Add enough buttermilk to make a stiff dough. Turn onto floured board. Knead slightly. Roll into rectangle 1/4 inch thick. Spread with soft butter. Sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon. Roll as for a jelly roll. Cut into slices 3/4 inch thick. Place cut side down on baking sheet. Bake in hot oven, 475 degrees for 20 minutes. Makes 12 Buns.

Salem Nut Bread

This week's recipe is Salem Nut Bread, and would be perfect for a warm after meal treat or early morning breakfast!

Ingredients:

  • 2 Cups of Graham Flour (or crush graham crackers into a dust)

  • 1 Cup Nut meats

  • 2/3 Cup Sugar

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1 Cup Raisins

  • 2 eggs

  • 1/2 Cup Molasses

  • 1 Cup Butter Milk

Instructions: Mix and sift together the sugar, salt, soda, and baking powder. Add flour, nut meats, and raisins. Beat the eggs and add molasses and buttermilk. Add to dry ingredients. Beat until thoroughly mixed. Pour into a greased bread pan and allow to stand for 20 minutes. Bake 30 to 40 minutes or until done.

Orange Bread

Ingredients:

  • 1 Cup Whole Wheat Flour

  • 1 Cup White Flour

  • 2 Cups Bran

  • 2 Tablespoons Baking Powder

  • 1 Tablespoon of Baking Soda

  • 1 Tablespoon of Salt

  • 1 3/4 Cup Buttermilk

  • 1 Egg, well-beaten

  • 1 Cup Prepared Orange

  • 1 Cup Sugar

  • 1/2 Cup Water

Instructions: Prepared Orange: grind up orange peel and extract juice.

To 1 Cup peel, add 1 Cup sugar and 1/2 cup water. Let simmer for 1 hour. The bread should bake 60-70 minutes in moderate oven [375°F].

Devil's Food Cake

This week's vintage recipe is a family favorite, Devil's Food Cake with decadent frosting!

Ingredients:

Cake:

  • 1&1/4 Cup Light brown sugar

  • 1/2 cup butter

  • 2 eggs beaten

  • (Cream these together before combining the following)

  • 1 Cup Milk

  • 1 teaspoon Baking soda

  • 2 Cups Flour

  • 2 Squares Bakers Chocolate melted

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Icing:

  • 9 Tablespoons brown sugar

  • 6 Tablespoons Heavy Cream

  • 2 Tablespoons Butter

Instructions: Boil 2 minutes, add confectioner's sugar until thick enough to spread.

Tomato Soup Cake

This week’s vintage recipe is….interesting, to say the least. Tomato soup cake, anyone? If you bravely decide to try this recipe, please tag us with #shakersbakers #shakerhistory!

Ingredients:

  • 1 c sugar

  • 2 T butter

  • 1 c tomato soup with 1 t soda

  • 1 c raisins

  • 1/2 c nuts, cut fine

  • 1/2 c flour, sifted twice bettor measuring

  • 2 t royal baking powder

  • 2 t cinnamon

  • 1 t cloves

  • 1 t nutmeg

Instructions: Cream the sugar and butter and add rest of ingredients as follows. Bake in 1 layer in 9” by 9” pan, 30 minutes in 400° oven.
