Butterflies are part of an order of insects called lepidoptera that includes moths, and are a very important part of the ecosystems where we live. Butterflies and moths start out their lives as larvae called caterpillars, which besides being amazing life forms also provide a vital food source for birds. In fact, most birds can only feed their babies insects, bugs, and spiders, with caterpillars as their most important food source.

Caterpillars also have an important relationship with plants, and can only eat the leaves of certain plants that they have relationships with. These plants are called their host plants.
