OUR PROPOSAL TO MERGE THREE GP PRACTICES & RELOCATE TO A SINGLE NEW MEDICAL CENTRE
Briton Street Surgery
Westcotes GP Surgery 1
Westcotes GP Surgery 2
We wish to propose a potential merger of three NHS GP practices and relocate them
to a newly constructed medical centre nearby. This page will explain what we plan to do.
Current Briton Street Surgery
3 & 5 Briton Street
Current Westcotes GP Surgery 1 & 2
2 Westcotes Drive
Proposed New Site (on ground floor)
Junction of Narborough Road & Upperton Road
What is proposed?
Practice Merger:
We want to merge Westcotes GP Surgery 1, Westcotes GP Surgery 2 and Briton Street Surgery (all operated by Dr Shafi & Partners), combining our well-known teams and resources, to offer a wider range of services and appointments. We would like this to happen by April 2026 (the formal merger of three contracts).
Practice Relocation:
We are also hoping to move all three practices from the current out-dated buildings to a single, modern, fully equipped and larger premises down the road. The location of the new medical centre would be:
Formally Narborough Road School, Junction of Narborough Road and Upperton Road, Leicester, LE3 0AF
We would like this to happen by spring 2027 (the physical relocation of our current practices).
What This Means for You
Accessibility and Comfort:
Modern, Purpose-Built Design: The new building will feature state-of-the-art facilities, providing a more comfortable and private patient environment.
Improved Access: Enhanced disabled access, better provision for wheelchairs and pushchairs, and dedicated parking spaces.
Enhanced Services:
Wider Range of On-Site Services: The larger space will allow us to host more specialist clinics, such as minor surgery (lumps and bumps), long-term condition management and mental health services, reducing the need to travel elsewhere.
Increased Appointment Availability: Operating under one roof, with a consolidated clinical team and more consulting rooms, will improve our ability to offer timely appointments.
Better Patient Experience:
Centralised Care Team: A single, larger team of GPs, nurses, and support staff means better integration of care and more consistent clinical approaches.
Improved Technology: Investment in the latest clinical technology to enhance diagnostics and administrative efficiency.
Your Feedback Matters

It is important that our patients have the opportunity to share their views on these proposals before a final decision is made.

What is a GP Practice merger?
A merger is when two or more GP practices join together to become one single practice. This means:
The practices share resources, staff, and systems
Patients from the merging practices become part of the same patient list
Services are streamlined to improve access and quality of care
Why do practices merge?
Mergers help practices:
Offer more appointment options and specialist services
Reduce pressure on staff by working as one team
Improve stability and long-term sustainability
Share costs and facilities more efficiently
What is a GP Practice relocation?
Relocation means moving to a new site which has been specially constructed to accommodate patients and staff and other services (e.g pharmacy, physiotherapy, etc.)
Why relocate?
Relocation allows practices to:
Provide care in a modern, accessible environment
Offer more space for patients and staff
Improve parking, transport links, and disabled access
Expand services that weren’t possible in the old building
