Mapping against UAL’s Anti-Racism Action Plan (2021), we have identified areas where Teaching Within has a direct response or impact on the intuition's commitment to change.
Most significantly at the time of the 20/21 Q4 figures (UAL) Teaching Within has contributed 57% of UAL’s present academics of colour which directly impacts UAL’s directive to increase the institutions ‘BAME population.’ The total number of Academics of colour across UAL is 164 people.
‘We have considered 2019/20 benchmark information, which shows our overall BAME staff population is 23.13% and that 16.3% of academic staff and 27.92% of professional services staff are from BAME backgrounds. This compares well to HE in general (14.5% of all staff) but less well to HEIs in London (27.9% of all staff).’ (UAL, 2021)
This objective is to be completed over a three year period taking us to 2024, which could mean that, based on TWs progression rate of 85% to HPL/Fractional posts, we could have contributed a further 51 Academics of Colour to UAL by 2024.
To date, 61 Teaching Within Graduates (TW1-4) have gone on to HPL or Fractional posts, with a number successfully securing ADF posts, with the potential of a further 30 academics (from TW cohorts 5-6) being retained by the institution at similar levels.
Additionally under Objective 6: ‘Increase the proportion of BAME staff’; Teaching Within predates a number of the recognised actions e.g. directly investing in the GEMS community creating the opportunity for career family progression for non-academic staff within the institution, such opportunities are not often available for staff of colour. So far 22 GEMS members have joined Teaching Within. As part of our recruitment practice, we also run a guaranteed interview scheme that invests directly in those who apply.
Between TW1-6 inclusive we have supported 94 Academics of Colour to engage with the PgCert, 13 of whom have gone on to study on the MA in Academic Practice. A significant number of Teaching Within Academics have created research projects that focus on anti-racist pedagogies, contributed to a number of decolonial resources and conferences across UAL all of which directly responds to objectives 9 & 10.
