K-2 DISCIPLINE POLICY

COOPERATION CUBES

All students K-2 will use connection cubes as a part of their classroom disciplinary policy. Each student is given three cubes to start each school day. The students can tuck them inside their desks to maintain privacy or can choose to leave them right up on top. It's up to them. The goal is to keep all of their cooperation cubes for the day. They have a green, red, and yellow cube. If they need a reminder, we ask them to turn in their green cube. We have a container where they will turn in their cubes. Turning in a cube isn't made into a big deal. We talk a lot about mistakes and how we all make them. We learn from them and let them go. Students who keep all their cubes for the day will be recognized for cooperating and making good choices. Upon losing all three cubes over the course of the day, a student will be given a choice mark and parents will be notified.

CHOICE MARKS

We want to maintain an environment of learning for everyone and encourage everyone to use good manners, be respectful and be responsible. When one child’s behavior is affecting their classmates’ learning experience, we need to take steps to help that child manage his or her behavior. Each child has a choice card that is carried to every class, every day. On the back of each card are virtue marks to be a positive incentive for each child.

Below are some unacceptable behaviors and may be a reason for the Choice Card mark.

Biting

Destruction of Property

Excessive Talking/Shouting Out

Not following directions after repeated reminders

Hitting a teacher or student

Inappropriate Language

Lack of respect for authority figures

Talking back to an authority figure

Throwing objects in the classroom

Inappropriate restroom behaviors, including looking over/under stalls, shouting, playing in the sink, etc.

Inappropriate recess/cafeteria behaviors, including not following directions after repeated reminders, inappropriate language, throwing/playing with food, inappropriate touching, etc.

**Please note that these are just a few examples, and whether or not a choice mark is given will be up to the teacher's discretion.

VIRTUE MARKS

Through the Choice Card, positive actions will also be recognized and valued through our school theme of Virtues are the Gateway to JOY at SGM. As teachers see the students exemplifying the various virtues, teachers will mark the student’s cards for their virtue. After the fifth mark, the student will receive a Dress Down pass that they can use on an agreeable date.
