In an effort to help students make better choices, the Ste. Genevieve R-II School District has adopted a policy that will go into effect this fall, which outlines a new process for mandatory, random drug testing of high school students participating in any MSHSAA-sanctioned sport or activity.
This decision is a culmination of months of research and discussion by a committee of board members, administrators, teachers, parents, students and residents. The committee was launched in January 2019 and met three times, delving into the drug testing policies of the surrounding Mineral Area Activities Association (MAAA) schools. Of these 11 schools, six already conduct drug testing and shared their processes and intervention practices. After discussing how to craft an SG R-II policy, the committee made a recommendation to the Board of Education to implement the program, which the Board unanimously approved.
The committee’s theme centered around helping our students, rather than condemning them. Each part of the process was geared toward intervening for those students who need support. District and high school administration believes this policy will help our students make better choices and will provide treatment options when necessary.
