Calm Spot FAQ

The idea behind the Calm Spot is for students to re-evaluate their emotions and reactions BEFORE needing the center. In their home district, they will not have the center for behaviors. The goal is to help them self-regulate. If you have a student that is using the calm spot every day in your class, a discussion with the individual/SW would be beneficial to initiate a discussion of why they use it often.

When students are using the calm spot, not as intended- meaning work avoidance, sleeping, silliness etc- here are some helpful strategies that might work:

Here are a few Ideas others have used- NOT a requirement

      1. If they miss work while they are in Calm Spot- that work is sent to LS (Lunch support- High School) instead of extra class time
      2. Verbal counseling out session- Why did you feel like you needed to use it? How do you think this helped you? What are you feel now after the calm spot as to before? something to check to see if it's something they think helped them self regulate
      3. Students ARE NOT allowed to sleep in the calm spot. If so- they are red/dir to break. Eyes open
      4. Have them fill out a think sheet after each use of the calm spot.- this is a LAST resort and and should be a team decision if a think sheet is needed

If students are not using calm spot as intended (to self regulate) and are sleeping, making noises, being silly, throwing things- it then becomes a behavior with w redir/brk/center

REFOCUS PLAN FAQ

  • If a student has an unexcused absence during the three day time frame for completing his/her goals to be removed from a Tier 1 plan, does this day count in the three day total or do they get an extra day? (We are assuming that if the absence is excused the student would definitely receive an extra day to make up for the day they missed.)

If the absence is EXCUSED, you are correct. The next day they are present after the AE, they would have that day to complete the Tier 1 criteria.

If a student is AU, that DOES count towards the three days they have to complete Tier 1.

  • If a student completes the criteria to be removed from Tier 3, and is in ISS the following day, which tier would they be on?

Tier 1.

  • What do we do for half day students that are not present for activity/study hall or lunch, when they would be expected to sit separately?

The student's Social Worker will create an individual plan for that student.

  • If a student is placed on Tier 1, and does not earn their points during study hall or dismissal during the first two days of the refocus plan, and on the third day, they are in ISS, what tier would they be on the next day?

They would be on Tier 2, as they did not meet the requirements to come off of Tier 1.

  • If a student receives a bus writeup that would typically place them on a tier (OR is currently on a tier), but then receives an out of school suspension, are they still on a tier when they return to school?

No. An out of school suspension trumps the refocus plan, and acts as the consequence. When the student returns to school, they will NOT be placed on a tier.

  • If a student is on Tier 1, and receives their 4th bus writeup while on that tier, do they stay on Tier 1 or move to Tier 2?

Tier 2.

  • If a student is on Tier 3, and receives another bus writeup, do they have to start their Tier 3 over?

Yes.

    • Tier ONE- example- need to earn all in points in all 4 areas (arrival/breakfast, Lunch, activity/study hall, and dismissal) They sit separately from group for all 4 areas. Day one- they earn all points in arrival and dismissal, but not lunch or activity. Day 2- they sit separately for lunch and activity ( not bfast or dismissal)- let's say they earn all point for activity, but not lunch. Day 3- they sit separately for lunch- again to earn their points. ( if they earn all points- then off of tier 1. If not- then referred to tier 2)

  • How do you get off of a tier?
