My student has never played a team sport. Can they still participate?
Yes! All students are welcome to try out for any sport. Coaches evaluate players based on skill, effort, and teamwork when forming competitive teams.
👉 Track is the only sport that does not require tryouts—any interested student can join.
How long are sports seasons?
Each season lasts about eight weeks. Because the seasons are short, consistent attendance at all practices and games is essential for player growth, teamwork, and chemistry.
Who can I contact with questions about athletics?
Reach out to Jesse Walker, Athletic Director, who oversees all Roosevelt sports programs. He’s happy to answer questions about team placement, schedules, or athletic policies. (walkerj2@sfusd.edu)Â
When are practices held?
Practice times depend on the sport and the coach. They may take place before or after school. Each team has a Google Classroom where practice times, game details, and updates are posted. Students will receive join codes at the start of each season.
Where are games played?
Home games are held at Roosevelt Middle School or Rossi Park. Away games are played at various locations throughout San Francisco. Families will receive updated schedules at the beginning of each season.
How do players travel to away games?
Teams travel together on Muni. Our 8th-grade students help guide 7th and 6th graders to ensure everyone arrives safely.
What equipment does my student need?
Roosevelt provides most team equipment. Students may bring personal gear (like a glove or bat) as long as it meets league regulations. Coaches will share any specific gear requirements at the start of the season.
Why do some players get more playing time than others?
SFUSD middle schools can only offer one team per sport, so Roosevelt’s program is both competitive and developmental. Coaches balance giving everyone opportunities with the need to stay competitive against other schools.
In close games, coaches typically play the athletes most ready for competition.
In less competitive games, there’s more opportunity for all players to participate.
What’s the difference between the Practice Team and the Game Team?
Practice Team: Students who attend practices to build skills and understanding of the game. Those who show growth and commitment may move up to the game-day roster.
Game Team: Players who have demonstrated the highest readiness for competition and represent Roosevelt in official games.
What are A and B Teams?
Some sports with larger rosters are divided into A and B Teams:
A Team: Competes in most official games.
B Team: Practices regularly, may wear uniforms, and may not always play in games. Both are part of the same program and receive consistent coaching and development.
How do coaches decide who plays in games?
Coaches consider skill level, effort, teamwork, and attendance. They work to give as many students as possible game experience while keeping teams competitive.
What is the main goal of Roosevelt Athletics?
We focus on growth, teamwork, and belonging. Every athlete—whether on the Practice, B, or A Team—is part of the Roosevelt Coyote Pack, developing confidence, sportsmanship, and skills that prepare them for high school and beyond.
