Workshop information

The Benefits and Leaves office has partnered with CalSTRS and the Securities and Exchange Commission to provide employees with valuable workshops surrounding retiree pension benefits. Homeownership SF will be on site to discuss bay area housing resources for educators. Human Resources is also on deck facilitating workshops around benefits, pre-tax accounts, sabbatical and maternity leaves in addition to hosting office hours on-site.

4:30PM - 5:30PM: SFUSD's Sabbatical Program Information Session

Recommended audience: Certificated and Administrative employees.

Additional required criteria for attendance: Must have worked at SFUSD as a teacher or admin, full-time for the last 7 consecutive years

HR Employee Services will be hosting the first Sabbatical Information workshop to kick-off the program for the 2020-2021 school year. In this workshop, you will learn information about the sabbatical program, including eligibility criteria, the different sabbatical types and requirements to fulfill your program. Attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions and will learn more about the new sabbatical resource website, also scheduled to launch at the commencement of this workshop. Seating is limited!

4:30PM - 6:30PM: My Retirement System - An introduction to CalSTRS for new teachers hosted by CalSTRS

Recommended audience: Certificated and Administrative employees

In this 75-minute interactive workshop, you will learn how to make the most of your CalSTRS membership. Your facilitator will discuss the following:

  • Your CalSTRS benefits and resources available to you as a CalSTRS member.
  • How we calculate your CalSTRS monthly retirement benefit.
  • Why it pays to start a 403(b) or 457(b) supplemental savings plan sooner rather than later.
  • The steps you can take now to increase your retirement benefit.


5:00PM - 6:00PM: Educator Housing Seminar presented by Homeownership SF

Recommended audience: All employees

San Francisco’s affordability crisis has left many in the SFUSD educator community with limited options for both rental and homeownership opportunities. In this workshop, educators will be able to learn how to receive free support and connection to resources for their individual housing needs, such as application support, financial capacity services and housing counseling via HUD approved nonprofit services providers and attorneys.

5:00PM - 6:00PM: Helping Public School Employees Invest Wisely hosted by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)

Recommended audience: All employees

On behalf of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), we are excited to invite you and your colleagues to participate in our investor education workshops especially designed for you: California public school employees. By providing balanced investment education relating to participation in 403(b) and 457(b) plans, we hope to empower educators to make wise investment decisions.

There will be 30 minutes of presentation followed by a 25 minute Q&A session.

6:00PM - 7:00PM: Parental Leaves - Planning for your future family hosted by the HR Benefits and Leaves office

Recommended audience: All employees

This workshop is designed to help employees navigate the Leave of Absence process by outlining the steps needed to successfully take a leave of absence. You will learn about:

  • FMLA/CFRA Child bonding leave (Parental)
  • Taking a personal leave of absence.
  • Required documentation and timelines.

Recommended audience: Classified employee content, but open to all employees

This workshop, hosted by our partners at HSS, will help you navigate access to retiree health benefits upon your retirement. You will learn about important topics like:

  • Continuing Health Coverage
  • Retiree Healthcare plan options and premiums
  • Medicare enrollment
  • Staying informed about Retiree Health and Wellness Benefits

6:30PM - 8:00PM: My Retirement Benefits - For mid-career or late-career educators planning retirement hosted by CalSTRS

Recommended audience: Certificated and Administrative employees

You are helping students build their futures, don't forget about yours! In this 90-minute interactive workshop, you will learn:

  • How we calculate your CalSTRS monthly retirement benefit.
  • About the gap between your CalSTRS benefit and your retirement income goal, and ways you can bridge it.
  • The steps to take now to increase your retirement benefit.


Attendees are encouraged to bring their most recent Retirement Progress Report, which can be printed from your myCalSTRS account (www.calstrs.com)

7:00PM - 8:00PM: Benefits 102: Beyond health coverage

Recommended audience: All employees

In this info session, we'll dive into the benefits currently offered to district employees with an emphasis on our pre-tax Healthcare, Dependent Care and Commuter transit accounts. Learn about benefits offered through third-party vendors in partnership with the district.
