SFUSD High Schools That Require An Additional Application

To apply, fill out BOTH the Lowell Application AND the SFUSD application TOGETHER

  • Admission to Lowell is competitive and merit-based.
  • Siblings DO NOT receive priority.
  • Both the 7th Grade SBAC scores and GPA will be used for consideration

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can my student take Lowell’s test instead of using the SBAC scores from the 7th grade?

Answer: Students cannot take the admission test instead of using the SBAC.

2. Does my child need a letter of recommendation for Lowell?

Answer: No letter of recommendations

3. When do we take the Lowell Essay?

Answer: The Lowell Essay will be completed in either January or February at Aptos during one class period. Lowell will not see your essays and essays are strictly confidential. Lowell essays are not graded.

"Students who have the vision, focus and ability to work hard to achieve their artistic goals and who are interested in an alternative and highly creative high school experience are encouraged to apply. Students must live in San Francisco in order to apply to Asawa SOTA."

Things to know

  • One opportunity to audition; no re-auditions
  • Applicants may apply and audition for ONE art department
  • Accepted Asawa SOTA students agree to participate in their art department all FOUR (4) years


Applicants must:

  • Complete BOTH SFUSD application and SOTA application
  • Select audition date and/or provide a portfolio (depending upon art department)
  • Bring the application and/or portfolio to the school themselves @ Asawa SOTA, 555 Portola Drive, weekdays from 8 am - 3 pm.


Application due no later than Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at 3:00 PM - no exceptions


Audition Facts

  • Must select ONE of two audition dates - Saturday, February 2, 2019 or Saturday, February 9, 2019
  • Auditionees may audition ONCE for ONE art department only
  • No RE-AUDITIONS - no exceptions
  • Auditions are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis

1) Application - complete online and print PDF file from your email

2) Recommendation - completed by someone who can speak to your artistic potential

3) Student Essay - (1-2 pages) tell us how art has helped you build your world view

4) Portfolio - required for applicants to Architecture + Design, Creative Writing, Media + Film, Spoken Arts, Technical Theatre, and Visual Arts
