Dear Parents/Guardians,
While planning memorable experiences for your child’s 8th grade school year is certainly fun, we couldn’t do it without your help! In order to assist in the funding of some of the activities we have planned for your child this year, including our beginning-of-the-year cookout, games/prizes/incentives throughout the year, promotion, and our annual 8th Grade Day, we ask for a one-time $20 fee to be sent along with your 8th grader by Thursday, September 5. Any additional donations would be greatly appreciated and used this school year to provide extra incentives, activities, and experiences for our 8th graders!
Thank you for your support! If this request poses a hardship for your family, please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
The 8th Grade Team

8th Grade Staff:
Mr. Peter Graven, Science414-482-8400 ext 8470pgraven@sfsd.k12.wi.usHomework Statement:
We believe that homework is differentiated, meaningful practice used to monitor student progress toward the achievement of learning targets. As teachers, we use homework to inform our instruction and provide students with feedback on their progress. Students in 8th grade should expect homework to be an extension of their learning during the school day; anything not completed in class may, therefore, become homework.
Agendas:
It is the responsibility of each 8th grade student to use their agenda to record assessments, projects and/or homework. All assignments, upcoming projects, tests, etc. will be clearly listed for reference in each classroom, as well as online on our shared homework board. It is extremely important that students meet required deadlines and turn in work on time.
Welcome to the 2024-2025 school year at Deer Creek Intermediate School. We genuinely look forward to getting to know each and every one of you, and we strongly believe that this year will be a positive and exciting experience for all!
In eighth grade, our ultimate goal is to prepare our students for the rigorous demands that await them in high school and beyond. We stress the importance of critical thinking and problem solving, effective oral and written communication, and collaboration. Our classrooms embrace curiosity, creativity, innovation, and out-of-the-box thinking.
We expect our students to be accountable for their learning by coming to school daily, filling out their agendas each day and for every class, and completing assignments to their best ability.
We appreciate your continued support and encourage you to communicate with us through phone or email should questions or concerns arise. We strongly believe that by working together, we can ensure success for each of our students.
MISSION STATEMENT
As friends, leaders, and Mariners, we are here to learn, grow, work towards goals, and make memories.
We want to try new things, experience success, grow, understand ourselves better, and be future-ready to move on to high school.
In order to accomplish our goals, we will show respect, follow rules, listen, work hard, be responsible, focused, not give up, and follow through.

Make sure we listen to each other’s perspective.
The Forgotten Middle Ensuring that All Students Are on Target for College and Career Readiness before High School
Chromebooks:
All students will receive a school-issued Chromebook for academic use at home and school. It is expected that students bring it to school fully charged each day. Passwords should be kept confidential. For most classes, students will access Google Classroom to participate in class, check for instructions and submit classwork. In ELA, students will primarily use Amplify ELA to access learning and submit assignments. Math will use iReady Classroom Mathematics. Any paper assignments will be recorded in PowerSchool.
Phones, Earbuds, and Other Devices:
Technology will be used for a variety of purposes in the 8th grade. However, we ask that cell phones, wireless earbuds, and other personal devices be stored in lockers at ALL times. If unwilling to store your technology in this manner, please leave it at home. Cell phone use during the day (to talk or text) is strictly prohibited. Confiscated devices will need to be picked up in the office. If headphones are needed for class, they must be wired headphones.
PowerSchool:
It is expected that all 8th grade students utilize PowerSchool on a weekly basis to keep up-to-date with grades, missed work, etc. in lieu of paper grade reports. Parents, if you need you own password, please contact the school office.
Supplies:
It is important that students are prepared for their classes with all required supplies. Please double-check the attached 8th Grade Supply List and make sure materials are ready to go. Students will gather materials for morning classes prior to specials and they will not return to lockers until lunch. Backpacks, or any type of large messenger/satchel/crossbody bags, are not allowed to be carried throughout the school day. Similar to the Brewers’ bag policy, small bags with dimensions of 9" x 5" x 2" or smaller may be carried as needed for personal hygiene products.
Attendance:
Consistent school attendance is critical for success.
8th graders enter the building off the front walkway at Door #2. If eating breakfast, students may enter the new cafeteria through the playground doors at 7:40; otherwise, all students should arrive each day by 7:50 a.m. Students arriving after 7:50 must enter through the front doors and get a pass from the office. Advisory begins promptly at 7:55 a.m.
Students are expected to follow their schedules and be in class on time. Habitual tardiness will result in owed time.
Dress Code:
Please keep in mind Deer Creek’s dress code:
shorts/skirts must be appropriate length
clothing must be free of inappropriate slogans, images or sayings
no spaghetti straps, bare midriffs or low-cut shirts
undergarments must be hidden from view
no hats, caps, headware, bandanas, do rags, hoods, berets, etc.
no coats, gloves, blankets, or sunglasses are allowed to be worn in the classroom
Assessments:
Assessments are tools used to provide accurate indicators of growth over time. Their purpose is to guide and inform instruction by providing meaningful feedback to teachers, students and parents.
Assessments such as homework and/or classwork are to be considered practice of learning targets and are called formative assessments. Since students are practicing toward mastery, these items will be used by both student and teacher to identify areas of strength and weakness. It is important to know that some formative assessments will count toward a small percentage of a student’s final grade.
On the other hand, final assessments, or summative assessments, occur after the learning has taken place. They provide a summary of what learning has occurred. Summative assessments may include: papers, tests, projects, presentations, etc. Summative assessments will make up a larger percentage of a student’s final grade.
