Teaching & Learning | Literacy & Numeracy

We use the same tiered model to meet the needs of our students in behaviour, as we do in the key learning areas of literacy and mathematics.

Our classroom teachers develop quality, universal curriculum to meet students’ needs based on evidence they collect.

Intervention teachers, Learning Support Officers and Learning Leaders work alongside teachers to develop more targeted small group or individual interventions.

Literacy

At SFdS, we strive to promote skill development in reading and viewing, writing, speaking, and listening in a supportive and engaging environment. We plan based on the Victorian Curriculum and supported by best evidence-based practices around literacy acquisition. In our Prep to Grade Two classes we plan and teach using a structured literacy block which incorporates the 6 pillars of reading:

Oral language is the foundation of all learning in our Prep classes.

In Prep & Year One there are daily sessions using Heggerty for Phonemic Awareness.

We have an explicit and systematic approach to teaching of reading, starting with phonics using Little Learners Love Literacy Resources.

We are ensuring skills are taught directly in a logical sequence – from simple to complex; making clear the connection between decoding & encoding.

Fluency, vocabulary & comprehension are taught through listening to literature & reading decodable texts.

“The word assess comes from the Latin assidere, which means to sit beside. Literally then, to assess means to sit beside the learner.”

Key Assessment in Literacy:

  1. Record of Oral Language (ROL)

  2. Letter ID

  3. Little Learners Love Literacy assessments for phonemic awareness and phonics

  4. Writing Moderation
