Finding Hope and Community After the Earthquake in Colombia

Recent news of the devastating earthquake in Colombia has touched hearts across the globe. Thousands of families are currently grappling with unimaginable loss—grieving lost loved ones and finding themselves suddenly homeless as homes and neighbourhoods lie in ruins. In the aftermath of such disaster, it is entirely natural for people to feel deeply overwhelmed and consumed by a sense of helplessness.

Yet, even in the darkest moments, faith and humanity has a remarkable way of shining through. Disasters often reveal our profound capacity for compassion, bringing communities together to rebuild, support, and heal physically, spiritually and emotionally. Across affected regions, everyday people are stepping up to show extraordinary kindness:

• Distributing Essential Supplies: Local volunteers and rescue teams are working around the clock to hand out clean water, warm meals, blankets, and emergency medical kits to displaced families.

• Opening Homes and Spaces: Neighbours and nearby communities are opening their doors, turning local schools, community centres, and even private houses into safe temporary shelters.

• Offering Emotional Comfort: Community leaders and counsellors are creating safe spaces for children and families to talk, process their trauma, and find solace in one another.

Here at St Francis de Sales School, our students can also play a meaningful role in showing kindness. Distance does not limit our capacity for empathy. By holding the people of Colombia—and all those around the world facing hardships—in our daily thoughts and prayers, we foster global solidarity and mindfulness. Taking a moment to pray for strength, healing, and quick relief reminds us that we are all part of one global family. Let us keep these communities in our hearts and remember that even small acts of care and intentional prayer can carry hope across the world.

Feast of the Assumption Mass: Friday, 14th August

Our school community warmly invites all parents, grandparents, and carers to join us in celebrating the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

This holy day of obligation is a wonderful tradition in our liturgical calendar, where we gather as a faith community to honor Mary and reflect on her devotion, hope, and grace.

Time: 9:00 AM

Location: School Church

Our students have been thoughtfully preparing music, readings, and prayers for this special liturgy. Having our families present in the pews makes these spiritual celebrations truly meaningful for the children.

Please join us afterwards in the church hall for light refreshments and a catch-up with fellow parents and school staff. We look forward to praying and celebrating together!

Emergency Drill

With news of the Columbian earthquake, our school conducted a practice earthquake and tsunami drill to ensure everyone knows how to stay safe during an emergency. We are extremely proud of how well our students and staff responded. Everyone followed protocols quickly and calmly, practicing "Drop, Cover, and Hold" before executing a swift, orderly evacuation to our assembly area.

Taking these drills seriously ensures our community remains safe and prepared. Thank you to everyone for your focus, maturity, and outstanding cooperation!
