Kia ora koutou,
Welcome back to the beginning of term 2. I hope you all have had a wonderful break with your tamariki and that during these last few days you have been safe. Already we have heard a few unfortunate stories of families affected by the extreme weather. If you have been affected, please let us know- we are here to support.
On Tuesday 5th and Wednesday 6th May we will be having our learning conferences. Connecting home and school is vital for student success. These conferences are a fantastic opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher to discuss their progress and how we can work together to support their journey. Please make a booking on our HERO app, or visit the school office and our team will happily book an appointment for you. See below for details.
Thank you all for your support with the Easter Raffle. The support shown here was amazing, raising over $3,000 for our school.
So much of what makes St Francis de Sales School special relies on the unwavering support of our families and the wider community. Whether you contribute through donations, volunteering, supporting your child’s learning at home, or through prayer—we see you, and we are truly grateful.
Ngā mihi nui,
Nikolai Solia
Principal
Last weekend marked a momentous milestone for our community as we celebrated the 120th Jubilee of St Francis de Sales Church.
It was a triple celebration, also marking the 60th Anniversary of our current church building and the long, proud history of Catholic Education in Island Bay. The occasion was honoured with a beautiful Jubilee Mass, followed by a celebratory lunch at The Pines.
This was a deeply moving time for many of our families, especially those with multi-generational ties to the parish. To capture these memories, a special Jubilee Magazine has been produced. It is a wonderful keepsake that includes:
Milestones & Reflections: Personal stories and histories from parish families.
Sacred History: Detailed descriptions of our Church’s important sacred objects.
School Roots: A look back at the rich history of our school, formerly known as St Madeleine Sophie Primary School.
An event of this significance requires immense dedication. We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you John and Penny Holden, as well as everyone else who worked tirelessly to bring this Jubilee to life .
It was truly a weekend to remember, honoring the foundations that make our school and parish community what they are today.
"A special time to remember and a legacy to carry forward."
Term 2 Miniball (years 3 - 6) and Basketball (years 7 - 8)
A friendly reminder to please register by the end of the day this Friday 24 April if your child/ren is/are going to play miniball/basketball this term.
Athletics Day Results
Well done to everyone who participated in Athletics Day and gave it their all! It was great to see such enthusiasm, effort, and sportsmanship from all students.
Congratulations to those who placed in the top 3 in their events you have qualified for Southern Zones in Term 4. More information to come later in the year.
Supporting Our School Families
As many of you know, the recent flooding has affected several of our school families. During this challenging time, we would love to come together as a community and support those who need it most.
We are starting a Meal Train and are asking for:
• Easy heat-and-eat meals (suitable for families of 4)
• Baking or pre packed snacks for school lunches
Silver trays are available at the school office for meals.
If possible, please avoid using dishes that need to be returned, as this can add extra complications for families already managing a difficult time.
If you are able to make a meal or provide baking, please email the school office at office@sfds.school.nz. This will help us coordinate support and avoid receiving a large amount of meals or baking all at once.
If you — or someone you know in our school community — has been affected by the floods and may be too shy or unsure about reaching out, please let the office know. We are more than happy to get in touch with them privately and offer support where it's needed.
Our school community is always strongest when we support one another. Thank you so much for your kindness and generosity — it truly makes a difference.
Learning Conferences
On Tuesday 5th and Wednesday 6th May we will hold our Learning Conferences for you and your whānau. During this time your child's kaiako will discuss their learning goals, how we can support them on their learning journey and their general wellbeing. We encourage you to bring your child to the conference to celebrate their learning and to be a part of their next learning steps.
Learning conference will be approximately 15 minutes long, with the first time at 2:30pm. We will be closing school at 2pm on both days. Please arrange for an early pick up for your tamariki on these days.
See our booking form on HERO. There are limited time slots so please book your time in as soon as possible. If you are having issues booking, please see Fran or Suzanne in the office.
