Reminder: Teacher Only Day - This Friday 30 May. School is closed.
A warm welcome to our new families. This week we celebrated and thanked our wonderful support staff at SFDS - Office Staff, Teacher Aides, and Librarian! We are blessed to have such a committed group of people on our staff team - all looking out for the needs of our children, and supporting them to reach their full potential.
Catholic Schools' Day
Today is catholic Schools; day across New Zealand. Before his passing, Pope Francis designated 2025 as the Church’s Year of Jubilee: Pilgrims of Hope, Manene o te Tūmanako (te reo Māori), Faigamalaga o le Fa’amoemoe (Samoan); Pilikimi ‘o e Tu’amelie (Tongan). He challenged us to foster and transform our world with a strong focus on a greater sense of sisterhood and brotherhood, solidarity with the poor and displaying care for our environment. Pope Francis wants us to be hope filled and to look to the future with an open spirit, a trusting heart and a vision that views our world as heaven on earth.
As a Catholic school, we are placed beautifully to bring this vision to fruition. We would see our Catholic school as great examples of a Catholic community that fills our students with hope through modelling God’s desire and plan of love, justice and peace for all humanity. By living Jesus’ Gospel. Our staff are encouraging our students to be countercultural and to live a life of love. At our best, our schools empower students to respond with compassion, to support each other and to desire the best for each other and creation.
We will be meeting the two other Catholic Schools in our Parish (St Anne's and St Bernard's) this Friday for our staff professional learning. We have a great community together.
Garden to Table
We are excited to share some wriggly new additions to our Garden to Table programme — a worm farm!
As part of our commitment to hands-on learning and sustainability, Monday's Garden to Table group helped set up a worm farm in our garden area. This simple but powerful project has given our students the opportunity to explore nature, science, and environmental responsibility in a fun and engaging way.
With the help of some friendly Tiger Worms, we are now recycling our school paper, cardboard, fruit and vegetable scraps into rich, organic compost. The students have learned how worms break down food waste, how to care for the worms, and how the resulting “worm tea” can help our newly planted winter vegetables.
We would like to thank Annette Moffat (Grandmother of Heidi and Roscoe) who ran our session on Monday. Annette kindly donated the 'worm farm bedding' so we could recreate our worm farm and get it up and running again! We would also like to thank Anita Watson (Mum of Noah, Willow & Liam) who very kindly sourced and donated the special Tiger Worms. Thank you both so much for your generosity - it is very special to be able to involve our community in our Garden to Table projects!
We will be sharing our 'extra' Tiger Worms with Island Bay Kindergarten so they can get their worm farm up and running again! What an awesome community we have :)
