Message from the Board of Trustees
Kia ora koutou,
Just a reminder that the strike will be going ahead on Thursday 23 October (Tomorrow.)
Thank you to those of you who completed the survey on Hero to let the school know whether your child/ren would attend school tomorrow (Thursday 23 October) From your responses, we have determined the school will have a safe ratio of students attending and staff members working to remain open for those families who need to send their child/ren to school. It is important to note that the children attending may not have their usual teacher for the day, they won't receive their usual lessons but they will be supervised and kept safe during the day.
Please contact the school office if you have any questions.
SFDS Board
Mihi Whakatau
Next Wednesday 29th October at 9.15am in the courtyard (hall if wet), we will be holding our termly Mihi Whakatau to formally welcome any children and their families who join us in term 4. It would be really lovely to have more of our long-standing families to be part of this welcome. If you do join us, you will be part of the Tangata Whenua - people of the land in this case - and sit with the students and staff facing the Manuhiri - visitors, new families. Thank you for your support.
Class Placements for 2026
In a few weeks we will be making decisions about class placement for 2026. These placements will be based on a variety of factors that influence learning, such as current progress, social and emotional needs, and the interests and talents of our teaching team.
Your contribution to this process is welcomed. We invite you to share your perspective on aspects that can support your child(ren)'s learning.
Please do not request specific teachers, or to place your child in the same class as another specific child as it is usually not possible to fulfil such requests. Please understand that the final decision will be made by the school - and may differ from your request(s).
If you would rather speak face to face about this, please feel free to make a time to meet with Sarah or Mary-Angela. You are also welcome to email your thoughts:
Sarah Fountain, Deputy Principal (sarah.fountain@sfds.school.nz)
Mary-Angela Tombs, Principal (principal@sfds.school.nz)
Here is a link to the survey: https://forms.gle/A1swwZS598RxnW6u7 This consultation will close on Friday 22 November, to allow us time to finalise class lists prior to the end of the school year. Thank you.
Tomato & Basil Seedling Sale Friday 24th at 3pm in the Courtyard!
Last term, our Garden to Table group sowed a range of tomato and basil seeds. With the help of one of our dedicated parent volunteers, Anita Watson. These seeds have been carefully tended and grown into healthy seedlings — now ready to be planted in your own garden! With Labour Weekend just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to get planting.
We’ll be selling our tomato and basil seedlings at school this Friday 24 October at 3pm in the courtyard. Bring along your gold coins to support our garden programme. All funds raised will go straight back into our school garden to help us keep growing fresh produce.
Thank you for supporting our young gardeners and helping our school garden continue to thrive!

Cultural Day this Friday
As part of our Diwali learning, we will be celebrating with a Cultural Dress Up Day on Friday 24 October. We invite all students to come dressed in cultural clothing to celebrate not only Diwali but the rich diversity within our school community. If you’re unsure of what to wear, you are welcome to come in your favourite clothes or favourite dress-ups. Diwali is a special time to give back and share kindness. To support our community, we are inviting students to bring a canned food item to donate to the local soup kitchen.
We look forward to celebrating this special occasion together.
